Hi,

I have severe anxiety about going to the dentist and haven't been in years. I had depression and really struggled with brushing my teeth, this has resulted in my anxiety becoming even worse as I'm so scared of the judgement I might meet for this.

The last time I did actually manage to get to a dentist (about 3 years ago, really put me off trying again until now), they weren't kind about it and told me to go to another dentist - I think they were honestly so overwhelmed with how bad my teeth are which is why I am seeking someone I can talk to first and make them aware of my teeth and anxiety issues.

As dentists do you have any colleagues or know other dentists in Scotland who would be understanding and kind to someone that hasn't had dental care in over 10 years and is trying to get better?

Other than that, is there anywhere else I could find advice?

Thank you so much for any help

Hi @velaris117, Scotland is a fairly big place - whereabouts are you?

If you can get to Glasgow, Mike Gow comes highly recommended - you can find an interview with him here:

In Edinburgh, Fraser Hendrie comes highly recommended - you can find more info about him here:

https://www.dentalfearcentral.org/about-us/fraser-hendrie-bds/

P.S. the photos might be a little out of date 🤣

Please note that neither offers NHS treatment (you didn't mention in your post whether this might pose a problem or not).

If you let us know whereabouts you are, we may be able to give some more suggestions!

@letsconnect Thanks so much for your reply! I am in Glasgow but willing to travel for the right dentist.

Thank you for mentioning the NHS treatment, I forgot to say, yes that would mean I would be unable to use either of the recommended dentists.

I'm back to searching for now, but thanks again :)

Velaris177,

You are so not alone in this, it might be a journey, could be the 1st you try or could be more, but You have the control, even though our anxiety likes to have that control at times.. Alot of places will offer a free meet and greet to see if you feel well and interview them before the treatment and see if you feel at peace there. I very much second the suggestions from Letsconnect.. A dear friend goes to Fraser and he is amazing with dental anxiety. I thought of this video from Dr Daniel , which may be helpful. Really wishing you find someone non judgemental you can be at peace with and develop a trust . It literally took me a bit to find, and once I did , I absolutely knew it...! no doubt. He was a gem.. They are out there!! Also Dr Niall Neeson has a Instagram page that is really great with testimonials and dental kindness !! I love to see his posts come through.. Just really caring guy!

Anyways, wishing you the best and let us hear your updates.. WE are here for you!

Try Fiona Byrne at Smile Dental Care in Linwood, if you're anywhere near there. She was a postgraduate student of mine and is both an excellent dentist and a very nice lady.
