Low Temp Crown

I have had a permanent crown on tooth 15 for a few years (5ish). A giant piece unexpectedly broke off while I was eating a Ritz cracker. I went in yesterday to have it replaced.

It took 3 hours for them to remove the old crown, fiddle with all their technology (they were really struggling with this for a bit), do imaging, do a billion castings, and then shape the temp crown. It was exhausting, unbelievably expensive, and because I have a very sensitive tmj and neuralgia, I am now very very sore.

After all that, it is obvious to me now that the temp crown is too low. I don't think it is even touching the opposing tooth. I struggle deeply with knowing if my bite feels right when they ask me on the spot in the chair, so I feel this is my own doing.

Should I just live with it until the permanent crown is fitted in 2 weeks?

This tooth has been hell for me. After an excruciating and botched root canal, a temp crown that was way too high, and 7 different dentists, I couldn't open my jaw for 2 weeks and ultimately had to have it retreated by my current dentist. Generally I love him and trust him but it was his wife/partner that worked on my yesterday because he was unavailable. It seems my entire bite rests in this tooth, which I'm sure is why the crown ultimately broke as well. What I'm worried about is having a low crown for 2 weeks seriously hurting my jaw and/or permanently damaging teeth in front of it.

The final complication is my dentist is 2 full hours away and hard to get in to.

Mostly just hoping for reassurance, or do I seriously need to push to get a new temp?

It is impossible to know if your bite is right on the spot when they ask at the office for me too, I identify with that feeling. It sounds like you have been through a lot with this crown! I am not a dentist, if this were me, I would think the crown is probably ok for two weeks because it is too low, I would insist on getting it fixed if it was too high. I don't think it can hurt you, but of course I am just a layperson. You might try going going over to the ask a dentist forum though and ask Doctor Gordon about this, if you want a dentists opinion. You could also call your dentists office, let them know what is happening, and see what they say.

I did finally get ahold of my dentist. He said that it being out of occlusion would protect the temp anyway, so I'm just living with it until the permanent crown appointment. I was able to get that moved a couple of days earlier, too. So that's next Wednesday. It feels like forever. This tooth has, indeed, been a NIGHTMARE!

I'm still stressing about it some because it feels so weird. It's annoying to feel my bite being off kilter. It's making the whole side of my face feel a little strange and sometimes crampy and tingly. But honestly I'm surprised it doesn't hurt more. As you said, when it's too high it's much more painful!

I'm so worried about getting the permanent crown and not getting it adjusted right. I hate having to decide my fate right there on the spot! Especially since then I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving.

Thanks, it's because I am a scaredy cat! I'm glad that it turned out the temporary can't cause serious problems, though it sounds incredibly annoying. I had a temporized implant crown that was loose for a week so popping and scraping back and forth painfully, so I know how miserable it is when something feels wrong in your mouth. It is great you were able to get the appointment sooner so you don't have to keep dealing with it, hopefully that will be the end of it, with Thanksgiving coming that is especially a good thing. Yes it is worrying they won't get it adjusted right, it is so hard to tell what is going on when put on the spot. Good luck with it and please update if you feel like it!
