Regular cleaning or deep cleaning first?

I have avoided the dentist for 12 years. I am trying to work up the courage to go back. I had a root canal done six months ago due to a broken tooth with pain. I survived the root canal, but have not mustered the courage to return to complete the restoration. I make appointments, chicken out, cancel....then repeat the process over & over. I would like to get this taken care of and have x-rays and a cleaning done in as few visits as possible. I have little doubt they will tell me I need a deep cleaning done, which with the restoration I will not be able to financially afford right now. Will they do a regular cleaning and let me do a deep cleaning after the first of the year? Or do they only want to do a deep cleaning first?

Not familiar with these terms, I guess it's US centric?

As a rule of thumb I would want to get the gums in good shape before starting on restorative work, sort of like not building a house on shaky foundations idea.

I just got a regular cleaning yesterday and a half of my mouth deep cleaned today and trust me I have really bad gums to a point where they are overly swollen and I am in pain right now. They are so swollen that I can't close my mouth and I am drooling and shit. So I recommend that you get that cleaning and take care of it because it can be really irritating. And your gums will become real sore and bug the shit out of you. Trust me get the cleaning ASAP.

Honestly the cleaning is not that bad at all, and the deep cleaning is a little more tough but not to a point where your gone die. I still have to get the half of my mouth done.
