Regular cleaning vs deep cleaning

So last week I had my first appointment in 6 years.. the dentist said gum disease.. have been booked in for a 20 min regular clean. I’ve googled (I know we shouldn’t but we all do lol) my question is with having gum disease why would I be having a regular clean instead of deep cleaning?

My follow up appointment after this is in 6 months. Thank you.

The deep clean thing is more of a US centric phrase, it's to do with their insurance system. We don't differentiate in the UK.
