Hi. I have recently managed to get to a dentist after 14 years.....that was the last time I sat in the chair, longer since I had any treatments. Having been turned down by 2 dentists due to anxiety I arrived at this one cold turkey having made no prior contact. I have now had a back molar removed. It was quick, painless, injection not felt though still extremely stressful. Afterwards I felt seriously weird and was unable to leave right away (fortunately I had sibling support this time) The receptionist said it would be the adrenaline. I thought she meant mine! (of which there was already a surplus) Somehow I have never learned anaesthetic contains adrenaline hence the rapid numbing etc. I would have liked to be forewarned at least & now my anxiety is even greater as I have further treatments scheduled. One is a retained root extraction. I asked would my gum be cut and was told no. When I asked how it is done I was told it was nothing for me to worry about (obviously my anxiety became clear very quickly) I looked this up today and as far as I can see the gum does need to be cut. During my break from dental visits I have lost about 5 teeth, 3 of which cracked and splintered and all of which healed over with no intervention and no pain. This retained root is the result of another broken off tooth and gives me no pain. I am inclined to pass on this particular extraction as it seems too much unecessary trauma. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

@Annica no advice but tell them not to give you any local anaesthetic with adrenaline in ! Makes me unwell so I now have it without. Yeah they won’t tell you how it makes you feel but the amount of people who faint or get palpitations etc is a lot .

I slured my words and it took me a few days too recover it was scary ! Now I tell them no adrenaline!

@Natzuk ...

Thanks. It was a bit of a shock I must say. It felt like a hefty dose, top and bottom gums. I will take your advice & refuse it.

@Annica they have lots of different types but tell them you want no adrenaline. Adrenaline isn’t always good for us as us women know lol we don’t need any added stress 🤭

The gum doesn't necessarily need to be cut to remove a retained root, in fact most of the time it doesn't.

The usual caveats apply about leaving it. You can either have it removed at a date and time that's convenient to you or else leave it, taking the chance that it flares up when it's not so convenient, say Xmas morning or first night away on holiday...
