Root canal not worked

I have had an abcess and I have had to take three courses of antibiotics and I got the dressing taken out on Thursday and the filling put in and it's kicked off again my. Cheek hurts and toothache. It took me loads of courage to go and get that done as I'm petrified. I'm now distraught as I was told if it didn't take I would have to get it extracted and now I'm going to have a big space that everyone will see. Does anyone know if that's correct and it will need to come out?

If you are getting so much pain, something may be wrong, and I would say to go back to your dentist and let him/her have a look at it again. That said, if the root canal has indeed failed, a re-treat is still an option, but I would personally recommend to see an endodontist if the first root canal was done by a general dentist.

An endodontist is a specialist that has advanced traing in root canals and does really only root canals pretty much. They do it all day long and have special equipment. I've been to a few dentists who have told me to go to endodontist for a few root canals along the way.. They may be a great 2nd opinion option. Some dentists can do great root canals and do most of the while others like to refer to the specialists if more complicated.

My root canal failed. Instead of extraction, my endodontist is going to do a procedure called an apicoectomy. It is where they go in through the gums and cut off the root tip. It only works if the issue is in the root tips, not a missed canal. My endodontist did a 3d scan to check the canals and said the root canal looks great, so it is most likely that the root tips have accessory canals on them that need to be removed. She showed me pictures of what they would look like. I would prefer that to extraction.

I would definitely go to an endodontist and have them take a look.

I know to me any chance of saving a tooth is a good thing to go get it checked .

Especially if you still have the infection. A retreatment, where they open it back up and re-clean it, or an apicoectomy, are the standard course of actions if the infection is not gone. They are designed to kill lingering or re-infected root canals.

As the rest of the members suggests, go and get a second opinion. The purpose of a root canal treatment is to remove infected pulp from the tooth and fill it. If you have an infection then there is still bacteria somewhere in the tooth and this can have several reasons. An endodontist is most likely to find a way to solve it and save your tooth.

I am a total coward as well! The only way I will make it through is with conscious sedation, which I am saving up for. The surgery itself is supposed to be super simple, easier and less painful than an extraction and quicker to heal. I am still debating what I want to do, though, just because I hate to go through it and it not work, and I still need an extraction.

An endodontist may just want to open your root canal back up and re clean it, which would be a simple procedure.
