Root canal treatment smell of medicine

Hi all ...

I went for my first visit for Root Canal treatment 4 days ago. The dentist cleaned out the root and I believe placed anti-bacterial medicine into it and then filled it up with a white material which is quite soft. Since then I have been smelling/tasting? of medicine in my mouth. It gets worse when I am sleeping. I am only scheduled to see him again in another week and a half to complete the treatment.

Is this normal? What is the smell of medicine? Is there a leakage of the medicine which is what i am consuming now? Or is the white filling material giving out the smell? I believe it is dissolving fast. It's really disturbing.

Everything you have described sounds normal to me and I have had a couple of rct's. I am not a dentist and this is only my opinion. If you are still worried give your dentist a ring.

I would agree with Dr Daniel.

I have also had a very recent RCT done with a temporary filling, I had a bit of an aftertaste like you but my dentist said that would be the filling material (it's now gone), he told me that I only need to call him if The tooth becomes painful.

We we are leaving it for a couple of weeks on a temporary filling to make sure that the RCT is successful and the infection is gone and after that he will permanently fill it followed by putting a crown on the tooth in a few months to ensure it does not break (RCT treated teeth can become brittle so this will strengthen the tooth).

I've had the same last week. It's normal, if there was an infection they may have put a painkiller in it which gives an awful taste but all worth it in the end the white stuff is a temp filling, it will crumble which is nothing to be worried about, when you go back again you will have the permanent one put in
