Root pin without root canal treatment-in lots of pain

Hello I’m wondering if anybody can help, I had a lot of dental work done around 2 weeks ago and I’m still in a lot of pain. I had the work done abroad so I went to a UK dentist just to check if this was normal as I had so much work done or if it’s something more sinister. She took an x-Ray which showed a dental pin directly into the root/nerve of a tooth that I should only of had a filling on. I’ve been doing some research and from what I can tell this should only be done on a tooth that’s had a root canal which I definitely haven’t and so the pain I’m experiencing is the pin sticking into a live nerve. It’s been 2 weeks and the pain is so bad I’ve even been considering knocking the tooth out myself. The dentist who did the work has said to go back to them to let them check it out and fix any issues but they haven’t commented on what it is or why it’s there. I’m so so anxious about the dentist anyway this is the first time I’ve been in years and I don’t know if i should go back to them if they’ve done this in the first place? Any advice appreciated!

Did the UK dentist suggest what remedial action would be appropriate?

I would be curious too what the Uk dentist would suggest to do about it and if it is abroad, is that going to create much more expense for you and time and all? I hope that the pain goes down a bit for you it sounds very irritating..

The UK dentist offered to just go in and have a look. She suggested that either a root canal or an extraction would be needed but she didn’t seem to have much of a plan and she wasn’t 100% sure what the pin was and why it was there. She seemed to know just as much as I did. She was asking the dental nurse so many questions and rather than saying this is what it is and this is what I’m going to do she seemed to be speculating on it a lot. I’m so nervous about the dentist already I wasn’t really confident in her plan so I declined treatment until I’ve had time to look into it. She did seem very surprised that I would be able to cope with the pain though. I could go back abroad, the flight would cost around £150 and accommodation probably around £50 which I’m hoping the dentist would reimburse me for since it’s down to his mistake. I would want to ask him a lot of questions and find out exactly what’s happened before I let him do anything else though

Is it possible they tried to do a root canal without telling you and that it is a broken endodontic file in there? Try googling for what that would look like.
Your best bet might be to see a UK specialist endodontist/(restorative dentistry) or private general dentist with an interest/expertise in endodontics. Maybe Gordon has some better ideas. Which country did you go to?

The dental nurse was holding my head down at one point to keep me still and the dentist told me I would just have to bear it because the filling was on the nerve. I’ve looked up x-rays to compare and the object on my x-ray is much more like a thicker nail with a flat head right on the tip of the root whereas the x-rays I’ve found online of broken Endodontic files are much deeper into the root and thinner. The pain is so bad now I’ve even been looking up how I could pull my own tooth out to get some relief

Could you go to a different dentist for an opinion? Sounds like the one you saw was pretty inexperienced, everybody has to start someplace

Is there some kind of crown on the tooth or just a big filling?
