Setback

Hi again! I used to visit here all the time, and then stopped as I thought my dental phobia was coming to an end. I got most of the work I needed to get done, and I was going great. Until Thursday of this week. I awoke with a swollen face on my right side. I few days before my front tooth had been a little tender, but I thought I could just mention it to my dentist when I next saw him. So anyway, I went to the doctor and she thought it was an infection, and she prescribed antibiotics, the next day I saw the dentist ( the swelling has since went down ) When I got there, my dentist pressed the tooth, did an xray and so on. He procedded to "wiggle!" my tooth and tell me it was loose and I was going to lose my front teeth. I did have big fillings in them, but this hasn't been mentioned before about them being loose.

Obviously, I was horrified. I'm only 18. The dentist then had me speak to the treatment coordinator, who advised me about dentures or implants. I can't afford implants, at my dentist they are £2000 pound a tooth, and I need the front 6 fixed. I have no job, am classed as disabled and I don't want my parents paying for this ( we don't have a lot of money in the first place ) I was told nothing can be done on the NHS apart from a denture. The treatment coordinator girl was nice, she kept saying she's never seen anyone at my age with teeth this bad and that something must have went wrong when my teeth were developing, but that doesn't really help me much. I feel totally hopeless, and want to give up with all this. Is there anyone out there that can help?

A possible solution might be a resin bonded bridge. You can google it. It is very cheap, easy to make and in the right clinical indication can last for many years.

Thank you for your response. He did mention I wouldn't be able to get a bridge because all my teeth are very weak, and most of the front ones have been very deeply filled.

I'm SO very sorry, you have all my sympathies I'm 18 too and I know it is awful being so young and already having all this trouble. I'll actually be having my front teeth filled in the future, but hopefully it will be alright since I think the cavities there are not all that large. It just really gives you a bleak outlook on life.

Anyways, while I can't offer any advice on what to do, in my opinion it's a shame they aren't trying to help you more considering everything. I fully understand that it's not their job to go out of their way to help patients like that, but we're talking about something really serious here. Could you try sitting down with the dentist or whoever and explaining your situation and asking if there's any sort of financial dental aid you could apply for to help with implants?

I don't know what your disability is, but assuming there's no way you can possibly work, maybe you could find an online job? That probably sounds crazy, but I've looked into it in the past when desperate and I've seen some things like online sales representatives and such it wouldn't help much but perhaps it would be something.

Hi there, I've actually spoke to my GP and she's advised for me to get blood tests for minerals and vitamins as I've had issues with low phosphorous and other vitamins (sp?), which I understand can affect my teeth. She's also suggested getting referred to my local dental hospital, as they think there is something causing my teeth to be so weak. I personally think it's a malabsorbtion issue, I think I have issues with food allergies tbh as they run in my family. I'm actually agoraphobic, but I'm starting an Open University course in January for a BA honours degree in Classical Studies, and I can babysit for my cousins for a little bit of money if I'm in need. The dentist does do a 0% finance thing, so I could pay them up monthly if worse came to worst. Things look a bit more hopeful this morning, guess I just overreacted I've spoke to my parents and they've assured me that everything will be fine and we'll get it sorted. Never too old for a hug from your mum and dad, lol Thank you for your reply, I hope your fillings go okay!

I'm glad that you're feeling better about things, and I wish you the best of luck when you start the Open University course in January! I'm thinking of art college next year myself but I'm not sure if I'll take the plunge, maybe if I can get a scholarship have a great day!
