Around 6 months ago I was sat on my child's bed reading him a book and completely out of no where I got a severe pain on a bottom molar. When I say out of no where, I really mean out of no where! I never eaten anything just before. Haven't just brushed but BANG! There it was. I took some pain killers had a good brush and all was well for a few weeks.

I started to get the pain more commonly, so much so it was almost every day. I had some codeine in the cupboard and 1 pill and I couldn't feel a thing. I had a routine check up the next week and I raised this to my dentist. He had a good look over and gave it an x-Ray and said he couldn't see anything wrong. He told me to call back if it becomes worse and to keep flossing and hopefully it should stop (I never flossed until then).

A few days went by and the pain was becoming unbearable, I have always trusted my dentist but I knew something was wrong. So I went in for a emergency appointment. He gave me the same advice as before and that drilling the filling that was already there could do more harm than good. He said it could be cracked but it doesn't show the signs. Never the less he booked me in for a filling on a different tooth (no where near the one causing pain).

today is Friday and I just had the tooth ache. I have a appointment on Monday for the filling on the pain-free tooth. I very almost went to the hospital to see if they could release me from this pain today. I'm hoping I can hold out until Monday so I can get him to drill the problem tooth first.

Has anyone had the same or could offer any advise?

Hi WELCOME to the forum :jump::jump::jump:

Sometimes this can happen but do not give up, it could be that the root has a crack or the filling that the x ray is not detecting. It could be that there is some decay that is not showing on the x ray, I think it would be worth the dentist drilling the filling and replacing it as it is causing you so much pain.

I am not a dentist but from a patients point of view, why drill a tooth that isn't hurting and leave one that is killing. Unless it is referred pain, I think your dentist needs to investigate this problem more. Remember you are in charge and have to agree to any treatment being preformed.

Ask the dentist to investigate this more before doing the other tooth. :butterfly:

Carole actually is right on the mark. It is very possible there could be a small crack in the tooth, or something else minor. On two occasions, I had mysterious pain in a tooth, having no idea what it was. Once, it was a problem within the gum, which caused the sensitivity, and another time, was the fact my bite was off, after a filling. I am an avid believer in warm salt water rinses. (they certainly can't hurt ) But I would ring up your dentist, see if he/she can help in your discomfort. Best of luck!
