hi well i've heard alot about getting pre molars removed and that is causes sleep apnea and other things and its really scaring me and making me put off doing it(they want to remove wisdom teeth to all at once so.. 8 teeth. having surgery is pretty scary to ive never had it), but with the way my teeth are right now im wondering if it will even make a difference because all of my canines are out of place completely pretty much and the rest of the teeth are all together like teeth should be(except i have a small gap where i lost a baby tooth a few years ago)

so based on that can anyone help me figure out if getting them taken out will actually cause any problems because i have been thinking about it and i feel like it wont really but i want more opinions other then mine. i havent talked to the orthodontist about it

I had 4 premolars extracted aged 14 (I'm 50 now) because my teeth were becoming overcrowded with my upper canines growing over them. Following extraction a brace followed which mostly straightened my teeth. I only wore it at night because it had a horrible plastic plate and made me gag. I don't think the wire-only braces were available then.

Within a year, the gaps had closed up but my teeth are still a bit squeezed together. They would have been far worse without the extractions.

I have my upper wisdom teeth but both lowers are impacted and haven't caused any problems (yet) but bits of food can get trapped beneath the skin flap over them.

so you dont have any problems because of it ?

i know i need to get them taken out and that ill be worse off if i dont but all these complications ive read about on yahoo answers is really scaring me and i just wanna see if its common at all

I've had no problems resulting from it at all.

Without it, I would have had very over-crowded teeth. Having 4 extractions wasn't pleasant but I understand it is routine practice to help relieve overcrowding. There's no way my teeth could have been straightened without the procedure and a brace - I had premolars almost beneath my canines!

Definitely no sleep apnoea or whatever other nasties you might have been reading about!

I had 3 premolars extracted when I was young, 2 upper and 1 lower, the intention being to fit braces. The fact that the dentist and his assistant were physically and mentally abusive to me put me off dentists for well over 20 years (and I'm not over-keen on them even now) and the braces never got fitted. My mother gave up trying to take me back after I ran across 4 lanes of city traffic, air brakes and horns going off nineteen to the dozen, rather than re-enter that clinic. HOWEVER, the extractions themselves have never given me any problems or caused any ill-effects whatsoever. There were no complications because of them. The only thing that disturbs my sleep is my husband snoring!

Hi, my daughter had 4 teeth out when she was 11 to help straighten her teeth with orthodontic treatment. The gaps left were worrying at the time but once the treatment was under way the other teeth seemed to slide into place.

She had to wear a removable plate until the extraction area had healed then 3 months later the fixed braces where fitted. The braces stayed on for 3 years and now the treatment is finished her teeth are beautiful. She is now 16 has no problems with her teeth and is very happy with the way her teeth look, often having comments telling her so.

My husband and I questioned the orthodontist is great depth prior to agreeing to the treatment with concerns that the treatment was unnecessary and could leave her teeth in a mess, but we were reassured that her teeth at that time were over crowded and starting to cross at the front also that she had molars that were impacting and that she was at the best age to correct the problem.

Our daughter was unhappy with her teeth at that time and wanted the treatment although there were times during the treatment process that she insisted we made her have it done. She did experience some discomfort when the braces were adjusted but we had confidence in the orthodontist. it is important that you follow the oral hygiene instructions and go along to the appointments. It requires commitment but the results for our daughter were worth it.

I feel I should add that if I had had the intended braces fitted, I would not have the dental problems I have now!
So I would say go ahead!

thanks everyone for your replies i feel much better about it. :)
