I last saw my dentist three weeks ago. He said one of my front teeth didn't have a cavity yet, but would soon. I have since made an appt to go in because I'm fairly certain it is a cavity now (I can see a sort of hole). The appt is in a little over a week and a half. My fear is can this cavity get much worse between now and then. As of right now I occasionally feel something, not quite pain, but almost like someone was pushing on it. There's not really hot or cold sensitivity yet. I've had one filling already so I'm not too scared if it's just that, but I am terrified at the idea of needing more than a simple filling. I've tried searching other sources but they talk about cavities in molars and I'm concerned a front tooth could get worse faster since it is thinner. What I read about molars have had significantly longer times so I'm probably safe but I would feel a lot better if this could be confirmed.

I don't want to go to a different dentist since he is nice and they can't get me in any sooner.

Hello
Cavities develop very slowly, in the scale of months and even years, and the fact you do not feel sensitivity is a very good sign. Your concern of preventing complications is a healthy one but bare in mind that there is no rush in treating the tooth as quickly as possible.
Discoloration does not necessarilymean a cavity which is needed to be treated. Sometimes our teeth contain groves and pits which can easily can be accumulated with pigmentation and get stained, but they do not contain bacteria which can cause the cavity to grow further. Usually these stains can be removed easily during a mouth cleaning and should be observed on the regular check-ups.

all the best:)

I had a filling in my other front tooth, and this one looks very similar to the other one when it had the cavity, so I'm sure that it does need a filling, but thank you so much for your reassurance that they take so long to develop. I have been occasionally feeling a faint tinge of pain, but only when I'm thinking about it, so it may just be psychosomatic.

Thank you.
