20F, emergency dentist in a few hours because something is very wrong with my tooth, terrified getting urgent sedation would be impossible (NHS) :(

so, in april i had a really bad biting trauma to my tooth, i essentially sprained my tooth ligament. i went to the emergency dentist because it was agonising (i hadn’t been to a dentist since i was 13, but that’s how bad it was). she x-rayed it and said that it was a widened ligament, and said to come back if there were any changes, but i don’t think there was until now.

2 weeks ago, i noticed a very hard lump way at the top of my gum above the tooth while i was out with my boyfriend, it terrified me and i had a panic attack and we had to go home. it hasn’t started to be painful but it has gone from invisible and only feelable, to a visible and lower down large bump above the tooth. i’m so, so scared, i’ve been having constant panic attacks, 10-hour-long fever dream nightmares, etc. my dental phobia is so severe that i have felt as if i was going to pass out.

my mum is helping me to get an emergency dental appointment today and i’m not an idiot, i know it’s going to be something that will need a treatment, but i know for a fact that it will traumatise me and i will not be able to cope without sedation. i have been sobbing, unable to function for days, at the thought of being left to suffer and terrified without treatment, or to be forced into going through with a treatment without sedation (as in, it being my only option). i can’t do it. i WOULD be able to go through with an invasive treatment with IV sedation.

i’m terrified that through waiting lists or through treating me like any other patient who just doesn’t really care (i have a DEBILITATING dental phobia, extreme anxiety and a panic disorder, i’m neurodivergent, i receive proof of that through disability allowance) the scottish NHS will make it impossible for me to access urgent sedation care for whatever needs done. the thought of it has me sobbing again, i have to go in a few hours and i’m terrified out of my mind, i feel paralysed with fear. i’m terrified they will leave me to go untreated and to let it get worse, because i’m too hard to treat and that my issues and my neurodivergence are not going to be taken seriously enough to do anything for me that would let whatever it is be treated as soon as possible under sedation, not in weeks or months. i’m so frightened.
