2hrs to get access to my canals and it’s gone downhill from there

Hi, posting this as I’m at a loss and scared.

I’d lost 2 teeth from being afraid so this time I went and trusted a dentist to help me.

October 1st I went for my RCT. She took 2hrs of constant drilling and working on my tooth (lower 6) to get access. Lots of blood. She then scheduled me for the second half in December (!!)
5 days later my face was swollen and my neck and up to my eye.

Emergency dentist spent 10mins sucking puss out of my gums. I was beyond panic. Two lots of antibiotics given.


A week later still in mild pain and hard lump on my gum that’s large and makes me not be able to move my cheek up.
I found a new dentist who completed the root canal easily 11 days ago.
I still have the lump, he says it’s in my drainage gland, the tooth feels fine and no pain just this big lump.
I’m on a combination of paracetamol and when it’s bad dihydrocodeine for the pain. Had 5 days of Penicilin which did nothing and now 5 days of metronidazole again.

I’m so scared. I will be speaking to him tomorrow but will this lump ever go? It’s throbbing right now. He said lots of trauma and I had 4 canals not 3!

Does a hard lump infection go on its own or need longer than 5 days antibiotics?

Does the tooth just need to come out?

1) Yes, assuming the root canals are properly sealed up, you said the tooth feels fine now, so it should improve. Longer antibiotics are not required.

2) Again, if the canals are sealed up and the tooth feels fine, then there's no need to remove it.

What is the lump on the gum that got unleashed when the root canal procedure was done a month ago?

It’s day 3 on second lot of metronidazole and it’s shrunk slightly again but still throbs. Still needs paracetamol and ibuprofen.

My concern is if I’m not on antibiotics the lump grows.

I don't know, sorry.
If the root canal is successful then the source of the infection is removed and your body's immune system will take care of anything left over. If it isn't then it won't. Unfortunately I don't know which it is.
