7 teeth out tomorrow under concious sedation HELP X

i was given an appointment by my local anasthetic clinic to have 7 teeth removed this september but i know i am absolutely terrified of the dentist due to a bad experience years ago and if i had to wait that long i would have bottled out of going.....anyway when i rang today to see if i could get a cancellation any earlier i was given an appointment for get this TOMORROW!!!!. the thing is i am absolutely terrified of everything to do with the dentist my teeth are mainly at gum level or just below i would sincerely appreciate and advice or comments for people who have had this done too i am in tears with nerves any post that will help me understand what is going to happen or how i am going to feel afterwards will be of massive help i know i may sound like a cry baby but i am just so terrified thank you in advance xxxxx

If you think you're nervous...you are now talking to the world's worst gold-plated 18 carat extraction-phobe. I am ABSOLUTLY TERRIFIED of having teeth out. I would like to thank all the bad brutal dentists for making me that way when I was a child. I have a real phobia about it. I shouldn't have with all the drugs and techniques around today, but I am, and always likely to be.

So I know EXACTLY where you are. I had a molar pulled over a year ago under IV sedation. I can't describe the sheer terror I was in before I had it. But once in the chair, a tiny pinch in the back of the hand, and that was it. Done.

I had another molar pulled two months ago and I insisted I went to a private clinic and paid a lot of money to have it out under IV - because thats the only way its coming out. Even though I had it all before, I sat in that chair shaking so much, even the light was moving (not joking here), I was in a real emotional mess. Why? No idea. Its a phobia. I had no reason to be like it.

But despite all this, I can tell you what is going to happen. (assuming you are having IV sedation). You go into the surgery, quickly get weighed, sit in the chair, a TINY little pinch as a cannula goes into your hand - which you can bearly feel, in goes the drug, count to ten and open eyes in the next room minus tooth. No feelings, no sensations, no memory of the whole thing. Over and done with in an instant. Simple as that. The only way to get stuff done!!

Its awesome stuff. Trust me. You will want it all the time.

The worst bit is the waiting. The anticipation and fear of the unknown.

First, welcome to the forum.

You have come to the right place. Dental fear can quickly rob you of quality of life. You are doing the best thing in the world standing up to the fear. You have far more courage and resolve than you believe.

As far as getting the teeth taken care of. Teeth that are missing crowns (the top part of the tooth) are easier to extract than intact ones. They also tend to have less attachment and are easier to access. The entire procedure is painless and all you will feel is some pressure. The local will take care of any pain during the procedure.

The whole can be done fairly quickly. You might have some swelling and be sore, ibuprofen and ice will really help. You will need to stay away from drinking with straws for a few days and eat soft foods. Extractions like this are routine and tens of thousands are done everyday.

You are not being a baby or weak or anything else. It takes real courage to face your fears. You should be very proud of yourself in taking this step to improve your life. You are going to do great. Believe in yourself and your abilities.

dear graham and doc i would like to thank you sooooooo much for your encouraging replies graham it was wonderul to hear how quick it seems not stopped me being scared i suppose that will stop when its all over and im still alive lol but was just wondering if anyone knew if the bruising i have read about is on my face or is it inside my mouth not really bothered to be honest and also how long it may take to have 7 extractions just wondering trying to keep myself calm by telling myself in just over 14 hours it will all be over dont know if its working but not in tears no more will post on here after its finished to hopefully give anyone feeling as bad as i am a little bit of help xxxxx

Good luck, you will be fine! IV is great stuff, I have had it 3 times now. All of my appointments were 45 mins including recovery time for roughly 6/7 teeth each time.

You may not have any bruising, I didn't 1st or 3rd time but the second I had a bit of very faint yellow bruising on my jawline but it went within a few days.

It really is as simple as in the chair, IV in, wake up, go home! I would recommend it to anyone, if you want anymore details have a look through the journals on here as quite a few of us have had it done.

scaredtodeath1972 by the time you read this you'll probably be back home and wondering why you WERE so scaredtodeath!
Everyone who has replied to you is right - you wont feel a thing, and most importantly you'll have faced your fears and come through it. You are SO lucky to have been able to get in so quickly - 2 months of thinking about it is far worse than the actual surgery - which is nothing! I had one month to think about mine, and then I cancelled! It took me another year to work up the courage, and when it was over I kicked myself because it could have been over a year before! So you're far braver than I was, and you'll be so pleased you did it.
