Could people please tell me of their journey through gum disease?

I have an appointment with the dentist next week and i am petrified. Sometime my front teeth hurt and my gum are swollen and bleed when i brush, so i know i have it without them telling me.

I was just wondering if anyone could prepare me for what will happen from now because i am now terrified they will tel me i will loose my teeth and have to have a denture.

Really worried any advice would be great

thank you

Hi Hannah :welcome:

I know it's easy to say but try not to worry, most people suffer from gum problems at some time in their lives (I know I have:)). But in most instances these things are treatable, often by a simple scaling/polishing by a dentist or hygienist who will also give advice on how to properly clean the teeth, including the gums and in between the teeth.

to give you an idea, approx. 10 years ago I had fairly bad calculus on my teeth and below the gum line, with regular professional help and a proper cleaning regime I was able to reverse the effects and at my appointment last week I was told my gum health was very good (scores of mainly 1s and 0s), I also still have all my permanent teeth except one which was nothing to do with my gum health.

hope this helps to reassure you, I'm sure you will be fine at your appointment :clover::clover:

Kind Regards

I had a pretty bad bout of gum disease when I was in my early 20's. When they read my numbers off there were a lot of 5's and 6's.

I had a deep cleaning (which wasn't bad at all) and then started flossing and brushing more and it's been fine since then, even when I was pregnant.

you will be OK!

Hi Hannahlouise!

Did you know that up to 90% of people have some form of gum disease right now? All stages of gum disease are treatable, and early stages are usually reversible. :)

You will be absolutely fine. Your dentist may do a deep clean / a regular clean and maybe probe your gums to see how bad it is. None of it hurts though :)

Just keep up with brushing twice a day and make sure you are flossing! It is absolutely vital to floss. :)

Keep us updated with how you go at your appointment next week, and good luck!
