Black Charcoal under crown ...Im very scared ..is this tooth or something else ?

Hello ,

Iam very worried and please need some help. I have a bridge and recently noticed black build up under the crown. I was eating something that came from the grill when I felt a large tooth like piece of black material in my mouth. I spit it out and it was very hard to break, but it broke into powder exactly like charcoal.

I am not sure if this was my tooth or not ? I also have not been for a cleaning in 8 months at the perio. This was the longest I have waited.

I am just not sure what it was, my tooth or something else ? Also, this morning it looked liek the gum line went back up a bit and was not as far down as before.


Can a tooth crumble into powder like charcoal ?

Your gum seems a bit low compared to the crown. Depending on what your crown is made of, you can notice a black spot between the gum and the beginning of the crown when the gum gets lower then it was when the crown was placed.

That's the metal they use to bond the brown to the rest of your tooth. Totally "normal" - I have 2 crowns from root canal treatments and they both have a bit of the metal showing. Your gum does look pretty low though, so you might want to talk to your dentist about that. I'm totally not sure what that could mean, but maybe it's an allergic reaction and your gums don't like that metal (totally not sure).
