I've been dealing with cancer for a long time. I've had four surgeries, four doses of iodine radiation, over a month of direct radiation... and am now on a chemo drug. Long story short, I can't lay down to sleep without my throat closing up, and ironically have a hard time keeping fluids from going down the throat otherwise... and it terrifies me to have any dental work done with all that going through my head.

A month ago I managed to pull myself together and had my second molar pulled on my lower jaw. I thought it was healing just fine and no worries. I've been having some soreness there and for a bit I thought I'd cut my gums or something, but that doesn't seem to be the case. On the inside facing of where the tooth was pulled I can feel a thin ridge with my tongue. Touching it with my fingernail, it's hard and rough like bone and is in line with where the tooth that got pulled is at. It's immobile to the touch... what is it? Is my jaw tearing back through the gums?

I don't drink and don't smoke...

It'll be the sharp edge of the bony socket. They are sometimes able to break through as the soft tissues start to heal over them. Leave it alone for a while and it should dissolve away in time. If it bothers you by catching your tongue for example, then contact your dentist, it's easy enough to smooth it off.

Thanks for the reply... I guess I've been forced to wait and see either way. Had a Covid outbreak in the family a week ago, not testing positive myself, but am isolating myself for at least another week. Would that usually be enough time for it to go away?

Maybe, it would show signs of improvement by then at least.
