I have looked for an anxiety group forever. I have been looking for one about Dental but haven't found one. I just need to talk to others who are also Terrified like I am to dental pain.
My story-
I went in for a cavity to be filled 6 years ago, and when I went home, after the novicane wore off- I had the most horrible pain. The tooth became abscess immediately. Anyways, the root canal didn't take and I had my tooth pulled. two days later the tooth next to it, because abscess and I had that one pulled too.
Ever since then, anytime I have a "twing" or a "zap" I freak out thinking it's another abscess tooth and that I will feel that pain again.

Today, I had a small cavity filled, and although the doctor said my tooth won't hurt after the novicane wears out, I'm still terrified. Help...

Pain is probably the ONLY thing I don't fear about the dentist. But each of us are terrified about SOMETHING to do with dental work, so we all understand. The thing we fear may differ but the fear is the same - it's awful!

All I can tell you is just because you had one bad experience, doesn't mean all your dental experiences will be like that. I'll give you an example.

I had a root canal, it took forever, several visits.... and the pain afterwards was crazy. It got infected. It was awful! Years later I had 12 teeth pulled at once.... it as all done, start to finish in an hour, and I had NO pain, NO swelling, NO bruising.... nothing.

What you can do is, before the freezing wear off, take a pain pill. Don't wait for the pain. That might help?

But you really should get your teeth fixed... otherwise they'll just get worse and that just means more pain (physical and psychological).

Oh, I agree with butterflies, you have to take some sort of pain pill before the Novacaine wears off. I know that horrible pain of which you speak.........25 years or so ago, I had a tooth extracted, just with Novacaine. The dentist gives me a Rx for pain pills, but neglected to tell me to take them as soon as possible. So I fill the Rx, go home, and feeling okay because the Novacaine was still at work. Then, about an hour later, I thought the left side of my face was going to explode.......I waited too long to take a pain pill, but not given any instructions on WHEN to take them, I didn't know. So I ended up taking more pain pills at one time than I should have just to make the pain go away.
Lesson was learned.......any time I have a dental procedure done, I take a pain pill ASAP, even if it's only Advil. Then I fill my Rx and take the proper amount as directed and I have not experienced that horrible pain since.
