After my dental treatment, my dentist recommended using mouthwash (chlorhexidine type) to brush my teeth for 4 days and I guess it was to promote quicker recovery.

I've read that prolonged use of chlorhexidine mouthwash is not good, but can I switch to other types of "normal" mouthwash and use it to brush my teeth instead on a long-term basis? Will there be any side effects? Cause I gag alot when using toothpaste.

Are you sure that's what your dentist meant? It sounds a bit cockeyed to me. :-[
Chx rinse will most certainly not take the place of brushing your teeth.

Don't use any toothpaste if it causes you problems, just dunk the brush in some water, or else try a much smaller amount of paste on the brush.

You could also try to use something that doesn't foam instead of paste, say Oxyfresh gel?
