I had a crown and filling placed yesterday, and I have a couple of questions. I should probably ask my dentist, but I've already bothered her enough!

1. The crown was to replace a sedative filling that I got about four years ago. She put sedative under the crown as it was quite close to the nerve. What is the sedative?

2. She said this may turn into a root canal because of the proximity to the nerve. She's having me take ibuprofen for a few days to cut down on any trauma inflammation from the drilling, etc. Is there any timeframe I should expect it to go? Or could it be now...or never?

3. She was super quick. I has Halcion, so maybe my sense of time was off, but it seemed like she spent one minute drilling each. She does use the microscope glasses, but now I'm paranoid she missed some decay. Is time spent evidence of quality? I guess I know the answer because I'd had super slow dentists that missed decay and/or put in fillings that lasted a month, but she literally had the filling in in five minutes. I'm paying out of pocket, so I just want to make sure I'm getting quality.

4. I know I should treat the crown as a regular tooth, and I really couldn't tell which one was the crown and which one was the filling last night. How long will crown cement last? If I'm getting three-month cleanings and six-month checkups, should they tell it's wearing down long before I choke on it while eating spaghetti?

Ha ha. I know this sounds so paranoid and that I'm looking for trouble as it was the best dental experience of my life, but I just wanted to check and soothe my parnoia a bit.

Thanks!

1) Usually a material with some eugenol in it.
2) Fairly soon or most likely never
3) Some folks work faster than others, but remember the drugs have messed up your body clock.
4) Crown cement will last forever virtually. Enjoy your spaghetti :)
