Crown popped out ... should I pop it back in?

Hi there.

A few years ago I had a root canal on a molar, which was covered with a crown.

Today I was chewing on something, and the crown popped out. I looked in the mirror aghast at the dark-ish empty space. I've booked an appointment at the dentist tomorrow.

I was then fiddling about with the crown, and found I was able to pop it right back into place. But now I'm wondering whether I should leave it off until the appointment tomorrow, in case food/bacteria ended up in the socket while it was off? Or am I okay to leave it on?

Any advice appreciated!

Leave it off, in case you swallow it or worse case, inhale it. Won't do any harm for 24 hrs or so.

I've had patients happily hand me crowns that they've swallowed and err retrieved, they always tell me this just after putting it into my hand... :)
