I'm having my long lasting issue with my tooth out finally so I have a question I will put this in accurate terms as I can incase a actual dentist sees this and can help me with advice and future people on the forum

I've had a dental abscess on lower right first molar since October and it's been painless in different terms it is basically a "chronic periapical abscess"

The swelling goes from bottom of first molar aka apex of tooth / jawline to 2nd molar and because of my phobia of dentists I have had it attempted to be drained even at hospital

Which resulted in little pus and mainly just hard swelling with no pus since then I've had 5 different teeth out building me up to get this tooth out

Due to anxiety I get anxious thoughts and paranoid it's spreading of the abscess will kill me which has made me getting this tooth out lot harder because of the anxiety I create for it

Anyway the swelling is all on outside facing jawline and cheek and not large I would say 3cm but it feels like it's moved slightly to the jawline more

When I eat etc and get food in the hole a pocket of pus fills up and gets larger and larger above the abscess and side of the tooth once I get the food out of the tooth it slowly subsides the abscess grows slowly and decreases too

Also antibiotics don't touch it I've had Amoxiclav and metronidazole, a young dentist told me it be hard to numb me and will be painful for me and is worried about my abscess

But my actual dentist who is a specialist in something not sue what laughs it off and says he reckons it won't spread and reckons getting me numb shouldn't be a problem as it isn't aggressive compared to other types of abscesses *touch wood*

He wants the tooth out but knows he needs my permission and knows he has build trust with me and beat my phobia and we have made amazing progress but the next step will be this abscessed molar

Which will likely be extracted with a PDL injection

So now you have bit of back story to the tooth and the type of infection it is etc

The question is will I be able to get the tooth numb? And can it be extracted okay with a active swelling and abscess around? Also if it might hurt how bad will it hurt and how long would it last?

Also what will happen to the swelling and infection after its been extracted? As I'm scared it will spread etc does the infection just go with the tooth? What about left over infection?

As antibiotics hasn't worked at all I won't be having antibiotics after its extracted but I will most likely have that medical cotton thing that dissolves in my socket after extraction

Can anyone tell me what I can expect from having a abscessed tooth removed?

I also am ill with a cold at the moment will that affect my healing etc?

I've spoken to my dentist about PDL injection and he says he's sure it will numb the front but he don't believe it will numb the back enough to extract the tooth while he's wiggling he expects me to be able to feel it with a PDL injection and told me to expect that it might not work

Is this usually the case where PDL doesn't always work on lower jaw molars? And is it possible to extract with a PDL with little to no pain

Hi sorry I can't answer your question but just to let you know that if you are wanting a dentist to answer this there is more chance of that if you put it in the Dentists questions part of the forum.

You will need to be patient as they come on as and when they can. They are working dentists and give their time free of charge to do what they can on here.
