Enamel

Hi, I’ve been using duraphat 5000 for many months now. My back second molar has an area of softened enamel, which I understand is early decay. This only became apparent when the first molar was extracted, as it was hidden before. I have been expecting this tooth to need a filling, however at my recent check up my dentist said this tooth remains ‘stable’. My question is, how long can a tooth like this remain stable? (How long is a piece of string I know).

Is it inevitable it will need a filling or if the enamel has remineralized/hardened, can it remain that way for a long period? Obvs will continue with the prescribed toothpaste as that has obviously helped and will also protect my other teeth.

No it won't inevitably need a filling. Assuming your diet remains reasonable and you keep the area clean then it should remain stable indefinitely.

Thank Gordon that’s good to know, I guess I keep doing what I’m doing for now then. At least I can get around it a lot better to clean all sides now.
