Extraction and implant in the same session - what is it like?

33yo make, located in the US, non-smoker, non-drinker.

On Tuesday of this week (in less than 48 hours!) I’m getting my tooth 31 surgically extracted, then do a bone graft, then do an implant, all in one session. I’m going back to the oral surgeon who extracted my 4 wisdom teeth last year under IV. I asked him for IV again, but he said he’ll only do local anesthesia, and gave me Valium when I asked for something for my anxiety.

This is my first time taking Valium and I’m a little anxious about what is it like? Will I be awake or sleepy? Will I know what’s going on? I’ve even heard of valium triggering panic attacks (which I’m prone to) instead of helping, can that happen??

Also, this is my first time being awake for an extraction and I’m a little freaked out about it. What would it feel like?

What is a bone graft? Does it hurt? I can’t seem to find much information about this procedure…

Also, what has other people’s experience been with these kinds of immediate implants before, either the procedure or the recovery?

Oh one of the things that freaks me out the most is getting my throat numb… I do fine with single shots of local anesthesia for fillings, but my oral surgeon will do multiple shots for the extraction… will my throat get numb from that? Will it be very different from just a single shot? Thanks!!

Mostly makes you feel a bit out of it, not terribly worried about consequences of stuff. Bit like 4-5 beers without the hangover.
Short term diazepam stops panic attacks, long term use can cause a sort of reverse effect but you're only taking it once...

A fair bit of pushing, some strange squeaky noises (hopefully from the tooth not your dentist) occasionally a sort of crunching sound like when you bite a crust.

What is a bone graft? Does it hurt? I can’t seem to find much information about this procedure…

Basically bunging some stuff into the hole to fill it up and prevent bone loss. No it doesn't hurt.

Also, what has other people’s experience been with these kinds of immediate implants before, either the procedure or the recovery?

No, your throat shouldn't be numb. Won't feel much different from the numbing you had to get the filling in the tooth.

I had an extraction, grafting and immediate implant of my front upper tooth. It was actually easier than the implants that were done on my molars and were done over 8 months. Mostly because there is no chance of the graft coming out and you have all of it over with at once. My implant was covered over by gums so that is t could heal and not be accidentally bumped, and so I could wear a flipper since it was my front tooth.

The pain was no worse than with an extraction…the implant didn’t add anything worse.

I had nitrous oxide so I was awake but out of it. I have had Valium for an extraction and it just relaxed me. I didn’t remember much afterwards.
