Extraction of already erupted wisdom tooth- Scared!

Hello,
After forcing myself to go see the dentist over a feeling of near constant pressure near my left back molar, I was told that my wisdom tooth there had come through( the bottom teeth have not at all and the one on the upper right looks to be trying to according to the dentist). I am scheduled for extraction in a couple weeks and while part of me just wants to get it over with, a bigger part is scared silly.

One of my bigger concerns of course is the pain. Now I have been given Valium to take the night before the procedure and one hour before and of course I know they'll the numb the area ( with an needle-eek!) but the pain of getting it pulled still worries me, especially since I have a small mouth so there's not much room to work with. The nurse told me this extraction might be a bit easier as there's something to grab onto but is there anyone who has been through this? Will the pain be just as bad as it would be for getting an wisdom tooth out that hasn't erupted? How long does the procedure generally last?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out. :)

Hi MinnieMe, the dentist will numb you up so that you won't feel any pain. I mean no pain whatsoever. It will be just a bit of pressure which won't bother you because you will be numb. Even the shots can be completely painless if the dentist has a good technique. My suggestion is to tell your dental team about your fear of pain (and needles), ask them to give you a lot of anesthetic and to test if you are numb before he starts.
My own experience with wisdom teeth: being nervous and sick as hell (sleepless nights, crying and so on), getting numbed up, waiting for ages to be absolutely sure the numbing took effect, the dentist starts and after about 5 minutes he tells me we were done. The most draining part was the anxiety, the procedure itself was easier than a filling..

Thank you for this! That makes me feel a bit better.

How about the pain after the numbness wears off? Is there a specific pain med I should ask for?

There won‘t be any if you take painkillers. Just take one before going to the procedure and ask your dentist about what to take afterwards, he might either tell you to keep taking normal over the counter ones or might want to prescribe you some. You should also cool your face diligently after the procedure. I cannot remember any pain or discomfort after my extractions.

Will Advil do before the procedure? All that's been prescribed to me now to take before the procedure is Valium.

Yes, Advil is fine.

So my extraction is scheduled for this Monday and I decided to take a test run of the Valium given to me ( dentist prescribed 10) due to the anxiety I am already feeling. I'm supposed to take one 5 mg tablet the night before and one an hour before the appointment. However, when I took one last night, I got pretty sleepy and also a bit woozy/light headed. So now I'm concerned about taking the one right before my appointment in part because I have to travel by bus to get to the office ( I am being picked up by family after). Did anyone else experience this with Valium? Should I altar the dosage?

I wouldn't be happy with a sedated patient going on public transport un-escorted. Can you get somebody to go on the bus with you or scrounge a lift off somebody?
