I have posted quite a few things on here and so far the support I have had has been fantastic. I am due to go into hospital for IV sedation to get what is left of a back molar out. I have read so many posts about IV sedation but still feel a little confused. I am stupidly scared and its only Thursday so god knows what I am going to be like on Monday. I feel sick just thinking about it and wondered if anyone could help by answering some of my questions? PLEASE!
Some people say IV is like being put to sleep and they wake up not knowing anything but my dentist says I will be aware of what is going on? What will I be like? I can't understand how just by being given a drug that calms me down that I won't know what is going on, I do know that afterwards you have no recollection of the process but in a way this scares me too. Will I be aware of what is going on in my mouth? If I still have an infection will it hurt as much as it did when the dentist had a go?
Sorry for writing an essay but from the sounds of things you all know where I am comming from, I just need someone to talk me through it!!!

Hi Minnie

I had IV Sedation 5 weeks ago for 23 extractions and I like you was so scared. What would I hear? What would I feel? What would I know? I was told I would be aware, would be able to answer questions but would remember nothing. The reality was...little scratch when needle when in hand, felt the cold stuff go in and next thing I knew it was all over. I don't remember hearing or feeling anything. I have no idea if they asked me questions or if I answered lol.

I had IV about a year ago and I'm down to have another sometime soon.

I was PETRIFIED before I had it. A nervous shaking wreck! You are not alone on that - beleive me.

However, as for the actual experience...

A tiny, tiny little pinch in the back of the hand...
Count to ten....
Suddenly find myself in next room - minus tooth.
Go home..sleep it off.

No feelings, no sensations, no pain....no memory of the whole thing.

IV is wonderful stuff.

Its as simple as that!

I had IV (well... ill get to that) sedation last thursday. Im absolutely terrified of the canulas though, so I managed to get put to sleep with gas, then have the canula put in and wrapped up while i was out.

I was in tears though before it all, I was so terrified. I've had 3 operations before but its still quite a scary experience, but i think this time I realised how amazing it is... I had the gas, 3 breaths in and I was gone.. I remember absolutely nothing! I woke up and I remember asking why one side of my face was so much swollen than the other, only to find out I had a gauze in one side of my face haha.

Theres really nothing to worry about, and im not sure if its the same with all extractions, but i experience no pain at all throughout the healing (so far), just a bit of a tooth ache kind of feeling, but nothing that bothers me at all.

I will do my best to explain the process. The medications used in IV sedation are benzodiazipines. These drugs produce a very deep state of relaxation and are also hypnotic and amnesiacs. The hypnotic effects are time distortion, emotional disconnection and mental disconnection. The amnesiac effects are the inability to recall what happens during the procedure. You are able to answer questions and respond to directions but will unaware of what is going on around you. For most people they remember sitting in the chair and the next thing they know they are waking up with the procedure completed.

They can also add another medication called fentanyl which is a narcotic. The combination of these medications relaxes the muscles, slows heart rate and lower blood pressure. The result is total relaxation and being anxiety free. The dentist will also use a local to numb the teeth being worked on. This combination insures a pain free procedure.

They work in under 1 minute and keep you in the relaxed state as long as needed. They are very safe and effective. You will not feel any pain or anxiety during the procedure. It is the best and safest method of sedation for dental procedures. You will be monitored during the procedure and the sedation is not as deep as under general anesthetic. You will do fine and and be very safe and comfortable.
