Hi everyone. I'm almost 45, female, live in a small town in Indiana USA. I've not been to dentist since 1991 when I was 18 and my last year on parents insurance.
Time went by. I guess I went a few times later on but only on emergency extractions of back molars. That was throughout later 90s and 2000s. Haven't been for real work or upkeep. When one has no insurance, and one makes a dollar over minimum wage (which is 7.25 an hour here), you just can't afford it.
Now my first molar next to my canine tooth has broken off at the gum on top. The molar next to that but other side on top broke off a few weeks later. This was in 2014. I had a severe abscess which put me in hospital 3 days. The infection was turning septic and was close to going into my brain.
Terrifying.
But without insurance to this day couldn't do a thing about it.
Now front trrth are starting to crumble on the sides, I have craters in all back molars, and it's only getting worse. I can't eat sugar, hot, cold, the pain sucks.
So finally I find a low income dentist. They require the money in full as one makes the appointment. I'm slowly saving. It's 90 usd for x-rays, cleaning,
Exam and treatment plan, $30 per front cavity filled and if I remember right, $40 per back cavity , and I believe $4o-6o per extraction depending front or back tooth. If I needed, dentures are $600 each top and bottom.
My main right now issue that super terrifies me is.... When they clean my teeth, I'm desperately hoping they'll fully numb me. I know for a fact the cleaning will expose pain like never before. And I'll have to live with this pain for months to a year before I can save up money for all the fillings. Unless they all need extracted. I'm not even sure. Bottom front teeth all the way to the bad back molars are near "perfect" : I say that because who knows what Inner and/or invisible damage is done. May NEED them all pulled.
Anyway....
Trying to make it as painless as possible, I'm doing my best to save enough to get all front cavities filled and hopefully get fake tooth put on my teeth so they look normal again (if that's a thing)? I remember when I had a pulling, they noticed my front tooth had a chip off and put something on it that literally made tooth look normal again. Not sure if it was a lot of white cavity filler molded onto the broken area. It definitely was not a crown, cap, fake tooth insert, bridge, nothing. Lasted 5 to 6 years whatever it was.
My main fear (got side tracked, sorry) is what if they refuse to numb me? If my pain is that bad would they just forego the Cleaning and start drilling and filling? I use a toothpowder made of 3 different clays and other natural paleo based things that pulls the toxins out and doesn't do all the bad stuff otc toothpaste does, though I just found it a few weeks ago and started using it 2 - 3 times a day. I'm hoping it'll do as it claims and reverse any gingivitis. I have noticed my gums have stopped bleeding and the minerals which are being put back into my teeth are kind of making the sensitivity less. Maybe that will help some.
Also if they pull all/most of my teeth, it'll be years before I can save up max 1200 dollars to get dentures. And being in that situation, I'd rather not go at all and keep the teeth i have and let nature do its course .
But I can't. I know how oral health affects the body. I have a few autoimmune diseases(rheumatoid arthritis and ibs for one, and allergy to gluten (not celiac disease) and lactose intolerance). I've read bad teeth can actually make those way worse. So I've no choice but to go. Ugh if they don't numb me for the cleaning, or if they do and I can't get fillings etc immediately after and have to wait in pain, I don't know what I'll do.
My phobia came when a dentist didn't believe I need at least 4 novicaone shots per area to numb pain. He gave me one and started pulling. Oh. My. God.. When he realized I had been honest he gave more but the phobia damage had been born.
