Hi!
I am in my late forties and literally haven't been to the dentist in decades. I had a horrible dentist when I was a kid. When I was in my twenties I made very little money and didn't have dental insurance. Once I finally got dental insurance I was too scared to go back and worried that I wouldn't have the funds to have the needed work done.
Well, fast forward to the present time. I DO try to take care of my teeth as much as possible-brush at least three times a day, fluoride rinse...I confess I don't floss enough., but I do use Plaquers. I really haven't had any problems. I am not thrilled with the way my teeth look, but none of them are loose, I am not in pain, and I eat crunchy foods with no problem. My gums do not generally bleed.
About a month ago I ended up with an impacted, infected wisdom tooth. I was in such pain I made an emergency dental appointment and was referred to an oral surgeon. I had two wisdom teeth removed and will have the other two out down the road. The oral surgeon was great and the dentist seems very nice. The dentist took panoramic x-rays and said I had recession and bone loss and should come back for a deep cleaning, so I am booked for the 15th.
I am now having a complete panic attack that they will tell me all of my teeth need to be pulled and I MUST have dentures due to the bone loss. I do not want dentures and I do have some amount of money I can spend on my mouth. I am also freaking out that my teeth will fall out due to the deep cleaning (again, no teeth are loose or painful). I do have some dental calculus, but again I do try to clean my teeth-it isn't like those videos you see where these loose teeth are just held in place by calculus.
How can I calm my fears down and go do what I need to do? The dentist is super sweet, and I took the whole day off work so I don't have to panic about that.
I SHOULD add the wisdom tooth extraction was super easy and has healed really quickly. (I had sedation for the procedure.)
Thanks!
