Gold crown question

I have a gold crown on one of my lower left molars. It's been there for a few years.

I've only just noticed that it has a couple of very tiny indentations on the inner surface, no doubt made by the molar above it (which is partly filled). I accidentally found them with my tongue, and can also feel them with my fingernail. I'm 100% positive that they are recent.

I've always found that gold crowns are extremely smooth (including this one, up until now) and am wondering if these indentations are 'normal'. Obviously they are caused by wear from bashing into the tooth above, but presumably that indicates that one day the gold crown will fail and need to be replaced?

As I understand it one of the many benefits of gold as a crown material is that it wears at the same level as a natural tooth unlike the other options which tend to be much harder and less kind to the opposing teeth.

I'm sure your dentist could smooth the crown for you and advise you of the likely longevity in your case. There are of course differing gold content levels in gold crowns so this may also be a factor.

Gold also has the benefit that less tooth structure needs to be removed before fitting than for the other types.

Golden crowns have a known advantage: they can change bait their form in case of extreme force (being stomped).
I have not seen your golden crown, but if this is the case I would leave it as is. But again, your dentist needs to evaluate, diagnose and decide.

I have a gold crown to.. I just had a re root canal on that tooth and the endo dr went straight through the crown. He said that gold crowns are good and i could probably not even have to have the crown replaced as if it was a porcilian crown. Go see the dentist, but i bet you will be fine.
