Got a new dentist who dealt with my tooth extraction like a champ

I posted a while back because I had a root canal that my old dentist did that all went wrong. She wanted to take my tooth out because of an infection (because of the messed up root canal) but despite me seeing her twice she didn’t look in my mouth or do an xray. She just threw antibiotics at me (not literally…) and told me to come back in AUGUST to have it removed. I then went on to get an even worse abscess where my gum had an excruciating swelling and I just didn’t feel safe enough to go back to her to have it out.

Decided to get a new dentist and from the get-go I knew he was the one. I was shaking like a leaf and he was so friendly. He even told me to come sit next to him so he could go through the X-ray and he gave me a rundown of exactly what he wanted to do, and gave me the earliest appointment possible for my extraction so I wouldn’t spend all day stressing.

I turned up 4 days ago clutching a teddy bear, trying my hardest to stay calm because I’d heard adrenaline can alter the effects of the anaesthetic. He and his assistant were really welcoming and asked me which parts I was most worried about so he could help, and then he went through each step as he did it AND asked if it was okay to continue after each step. That was a huge deal to me, I felt like I was completely in control.

Getting the tooth out was completely painless and awesome. I’m on warfarin so my blood struggles to clot, so he kept me in the surgery for an hour, checking the bleeding inbetween each patient which made me feel safe. Unfortunately, when I got home the bleeding started up again and the anaesthetic had worn off and it was too painful to bite down on the gauze. I phoned the surgery and he told me to come back and he put in more anaesthetic so I could bite down on the gauze, and then he arranged for me to go to a specialist clinic at my local hospital so I could get some extra treatment to be on the safe side.

I went (I didn’t like these dentists…) and they put some stitches in and I was sent on my merry way. The bleeding finally stopped after around 12 hours and I haven’t had a problem since. I’ve had next to no pain.

And then my dentist called me the next day to ask if everything went okay at the clinic and how I’m feeling. I feel so safe in their hands. Granted, it’s not NHS and I did have to pay a bit extra but as far as I’m concerned I’m getting what I pay for. :)

I'll be booking a follow up appointment in a few days as the hole is a bit smelly and I'd rather be safe than sorry! I'm pretty sure it's just food/blood and the fact that I can't brush the tooth behind the extraction site very well so it's all a bit messy back there. I've been keeping up with my salt water swishes so hopefully it's all good!
