has anyone had a replacement crown done?

I am worried how long it is going to take for my dentist to get my current crown off a back tooth, i've read it can take 1/2 hour to an hour to get it off, ugh, i can't have my mouth open that long, i thought it was going to take mins. and worried i won't be able to get this done or have to spend more to get it off with sedation at another clinic. I need some hope it won't take that long i thought they just drilled it off.

mine did take longer than i thought but i made it through, my dentist isn't as experienced as i'd like so probably part of the reason it took her longer. Just ask for breaks and you will be okay, think good things while it's being done or listen to music, it helps me get through these.

Hi there. I just got back from a dental appointment where my crown was replaced. It's not pleasant, but it wasn't painful at all. Let me take you through my experience today:

My dentist started by cutting/drilling the crown to section it into two pieces. One piece just popped off when she go through it, but the other one was still pretty attached to my tooth underneath (and that tooth still had a nerve so I was worried it would hurt). She took some tools to try and pry the crown piece off and it broke in a few pieces. She alternated between light drilling and prying and then it finally came free. I could tell when she hit my natural tooth because it smelled bad/burning toothy (can't explain the smell-- it's unique).

Once the crown was free she sprayed some water around it and then did some prep work-- shaping the tooth and scanning the area with a scanner to get the picture of my tooth/surrounding teeth. After that she took an impression of the existing tooth with a blue putty I had to bite on for about two minutes. She then shaped my temporary crown and glued it in. Finally I bit on the carbon paper to check for bite and I was on my way.

When I said it wasn't pleasant, I meant the sounds/pulling sensation. I don't love that part. Two hours later the novocaine wore mostly off and I'm kinda sore, but I think that's from novocain and gum sensitivity (since I got a filling in the molar next to it). Hope this was helpful!
