I'm new..so hi. Like pretty much everyone here I am terrified of going to the dentist. Last year I had some gum issues which I had been battling with the usual array of gingivitis mouthwashes and gels but when my gums still felt sore I knew I had no choice but to go to a dentist. The deciding factor is not wanting to lose any teeth...yes im that vain!
Money is a big factor also as im not earning a fantastic wage so after chatting to a women at work who is just as terrified as me she convinced me to make an appointment at the local uni dental school. I can honestly say I am so glad I did. Just making the appointment made me shake but I was determined to go. My mouth was dry as a bone and my hands were trembling as I booked in and I seriously contemplated bolting for the door. I have to say after having a really good chat with the lovely young lady student she really helped to calm me down. I told her it had been about 7 years since I had seen a dentist and apart from my massive fear I never go because frankly I don't like the dentist that had taken over the practice I was registered with. She tilted me gently in the chair, I told her I don't like to be flat and she was fine with that and with my fists tightly clenched she got on with the examination. She was very thorough and took her time and explained what she was doing as she went along. I had an x-ray which made me gag...not an experience I'd like to repeat but even then she was very calm and was telling me how well I was doing. I had a deep clean and left the uni with fantastically shiny white teeth and gums that felt like they'd had a spring clean. Two days later my gums felt 90% better and within the week completely normal. I have taken great pains to be extra scrupulous in my teeth cleaning since but alas it seems my gum issue is returning. I will attempt to deal with it myself firstly and if no joy in the coming weeks I shall have to put myself through all that again. At least this time I know what to expect and that the care was absolutely the best I have ever had at a dentist. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to say that although I am a complete basket case when it comes to the dentist it is possible to have a good experience and I hope my sharing can give someone the confidence to say 'sod it, I CAN do this'!
