Ok so i'm 13 and I hate the dentist. And I don't know why but I have to get two baby teeth pulled and this is the first work I had to get done in a long time. I am very very very upset over it and I can't stop crying over it. I have always been very afraid of all dentists and everytime since I was little I had horrible experinces there. It making me upset just thinking about it. I don't want to cry beacuse my mom get's mad and says I'm making a scene so I can't talk her about it. I had lots of cavity work when I was younger and Lazer treatment on my gums. Once I got a cap and they put this weird vest thing on me so I coulden't move and it scared me so much. I couldn't see my Mom and she is a singal mom so I hd no one one else it scared me alot. And when she comes in with me I get more scared and embarassed that people are watching me. And the lazer surgery the gave me needles and said,"Dose that hurt?" What in dof dentist says that. Then I said yes and he was like, "Really?" And continued on. I started to hide in the little kids waiting room so they coulden't find me. Plase help me I am so scared and I don't know what to do. I can't stop crying. Those weren't the only times I was afraid of dentist everytime I went even to Ortho's I am so terrifyied of all the equiment and it waiting there and the chairs.

I have to get two baby teeth pulled in a week.

Please Help.[smiley=ashamed.gif]

Hi

Are you 13 or 23?
Says 2 different things on your post.
You don't have to have your mum in with you, you can consent to your own treatment, if you are able to fully understand what it involves.
Can you take anyone who would be more supportive?
Can you arrange to pop in an discuss your fears with the dentist prior to your appointment? It would probably help the dentist to know your level of anxiety too.

Oh you poor darling, I'm so sorry to hear how scared and frightened you are about going to the dentist. I used to be just like you when I was young and the dentist I used to go to was HORRIBLE to me.

No dentist should EVER make a patient feel frightened or embarrassed; they should always treat you with great care and with RESPECT for your feelings. Can you ask your mom to try to find another dentist for you, one who specialises in people with dental phobia? If your mom can't or won't help you find another dentist, maybe you could ask one of your teachers, if there is one that you trust and can confide in - or maybe an auntie or grandparent. Or maybe you could even ask your doctor.

You could also ask your state dental association to recommend someone for you, or maybe your teacher or your doctor or another adult could do that for you. I hope you get the help, support and RESPECT that is your right as a patient.

Hi Giovanna0176!
I'm so sorry to hear you have such a tough time with dental treatment! With the right dentist it doesn't have to be that way, sadly it seems as if you have yet to find the right one. From your past experiences, it's no wonder you are so frightened. One trend I have seen with kids/teens and dentistry is to keep them uninformed as if they won't understand or are better off not knowing when all it does is heighten your fears. I finally found a dentist who communicated with me about my treatment when I was 15 and let me feel in control and that made such a huge difference! I noticed you said that you don't understand why you need these teeth pulled and it doesn't sound like you've been informed about what to expect with the procedure so it's no wonder you're terrified. You haven't been given a reason to relax about the procedure. The 'vest' you referred to sounds like some form of restraint which has also been known to trigger unnecessary anxiety not only during that particular visit but in future visits as it can really make the patient feel helpless and like they have no control over what is happening to them. Do you feel comfortable talking openly about your fear with your current dentist regarding the procedure? Sometimes informing the dentist about your fear can make a world of a difference in how they treat you and they may be able to make you feel more comfortable by slowing the pace of treatment, explaining things, informing you about what to expect, giving you frequent breaks, etc. Maybe you could show your mom this site so that she realizes that this fear is a real thing that your struggling with and that you're not just being dramatic. If you are really uncomfortable with the dentist doing the procedure, maybe you and your mom could sit down and choose one together that you may like??? Another option may be to try a mild sedative such as nitrous oxide if your dentist offers it to help you relax. So sorry you are in this situation and feeling so scared! Know that you are not alone and that we are all hear if you need to talk or vent or brainstorm about what to do! Best of luck.

Kitkat
