Well, actually, it does if I open my mouth too wide. But it's only been a few days since treatment; I'm sure that'll go soon...
I'd had a hole in my tooth for years. I hate going to the dentist, and usually only go when I'm in pain. My dog hasn't been well, so I used waiting till he was better as an excuse to put off worrying about myself, namely, my painful teeth!
The hole was in my top tooth at the back, and I only noticed it if I purposefully searched for it with my tongue. Every so often, it would become painful, but mostly I was able to forget about it. But the hole became bigger, and was painful on and off.
A few weeks ago I was eating some chocolate and my tooth finally gave up and crumbled in my mouth. I made my first dentist appointment in over five years. The dentist checked my teeth, taking an x-ray of my broken tooth. I was told that I might need dental surgery to remove it because it was so broken, and would be hard to get out my gum, or something. A few days later, I went back so they could fill another another tooth that needed filling, she said "come back next (for an appointment I'd made previously) and we'll try and get that tooth out." Well, that filled me with confidence...
So I went back (baring in mind I'd had a tooth out before, and knew how brutal it was), and nervously prepared for the injection (another thing I hate). First of all, it took a few tries for it to be enough anesthetic, and eventually it stopped hurting when she poked me with her dental spike (sorry I don't know what it's called).
So, she starts wiggling tooth with her pliers(?) and it's not moving, so she needs to cut the tooth with her drill. So she cuts the tooth with her drill, and tries again. Baring in my mind I can feel it grinding and moving. But it doesn't budge so it needs to be cut more.
More drilling. More twisting and pulling.
After a while, I felt a large piece of teeth come out. But it needed cutting more.
More drilling. More twisting, pulling, and grinding.
After a while, the dentist sends the nurse to get another (I think more senior) dentist. My worst fear is, they can't get the tooth out and are going to leave me with a tooth in pieces!
Ok, so he tries with different instruments. (they're all talking dentist jargon so I don't really know what's going on.
He tries twisting and pulling, but no! More drilling!
Eventually, another piece tooth comes out, and then finally, the last piece!
I don't know if you've seen Les Miserables, but I felt like Fantine getting her teeth pulled out.
The dentist put a swab in my mouth for me to bite down on, which I bit down on too soon and bit him, which he jokingly said was me getting my own back. (Not at all...
)
Driving home, my face was swollen, but still numb. And as the anesthetic wore off, it really hurt! But it was fine the next day, it's just still a bit painful if I open my mouth wide, as I said earlier.
So that's my story. Sorry it was so long! I just wanted to share cos I'm so pleased with myself for finally going to the dentist, and being so brave while having my face practically mullered!
