This happened about 2 weeks back...
I had a chipped crown, so I decided to go show it to a dentist. He looked at it, and told me that it would have to be replaced, as chipped crowns can't always be fixed. He said he can do it on a follow up appointment. Then he recommended that I have 2 of my wisdom teeth taken out. He said it would be painless, and he could do it right away. These are the top and bottom teeth on the left side of my mouth.
I figured why not, since I'm already here, but boy was I wrong. The bottom tooth came out fairly quickly, but the upper one took some time, I think he had to break that one in half. At one point his tool or scalpel went and hit my throat, I guessed it slipped or he lost control. At the end, when both teeth were out, I was relieved the ordeal was over. At that point I didn't think too much of it, I paid my bill, which came to $600. Insurance covered most of it, I only pay 20%.
When I got home, things went from bad to worse. I had an urge to vomit, and found blood in my vomit. I'm guessing I swallowed some blood during the process, as he didn't put any stitches on. I can recall one tooth coming out quicker than the 2nd, so was I swallowing blood from the 1st tooth, as he worked on the 2nd?
Next day, I was in quite a bit of pain that I ended up missing work. My throat also felt swollen, and it stung when I swallowed anything.
I followed up with him 4 days later, went to his clinic again, and explained my situation. To my surprise he said that's how most wisdom tooth extractions are. I told him about throwing up blood, and my throat being swollen, he said accidents like those are known to happen. I asked him why he didn't put stitches on, as I was bleeding quit a bit, he replied not all extractions require stitches.
What can I do about this? Is this normal? Is there an organization I can file a complaint with? Should I sue him to get my money back? Was he even qualified to do what he did, aren't extraction performed by oral surgeons?
