Horrible taste/smell from crown

I had a crown put in about 6 years ago and everything's been great with it up until a couple of weeks ago. Around that time I started experiencing bad breath and a foul taste in my mouth that I initially didn't know the source of. Then I traced the small gap between the crown and gumline on the inside part of the crown with my tongue and the taste was absolutely putrid.

I'm absolutely positive that the crown is the source of the taste/smell and I don't know what to do about it. Is it an infection or possibly bacteria getting caught in that small gap? The gap doesn't seem overly large but it's definitely noticeable.

And the foul taste isn't constant. After I floss, brush and rinse with mouthwash, it isn't there. But after awhile, I'll taste it again and intermittently throughout the day. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Get to the dentist and have it checked, it probably needs replaced. If you leave it too long you may lose the tooth.

A friend of mine's hubby has just had the same problem, was food getting trapped between the gum and crown, and they need it replaced - wish you well.

Thanks for the replies. I've made an appointment with my dentist.

Could it be the result of the crown being put in improperly and if so, does the dentist have any responsibility to fix it on his own dime or at least at a discount rate? I'm asking because I currently do not have insurance and will be paying out of pocket.

I'm guessing no since it was put in over 5 years ago but just trying to cover all my bases.

Just got back from my dentist and he says the crown isn't seated right so the gap is too big on one side. The taste/smell might be the result of food getting trapped under there.

And here's the kicker - he's redoing it for free!

Thanks! I'm pretty damn happy right now. Thought I was going to have to pay full price to have it redone.
