I begun the process of getting a root canal on one of my back teeth. My dentist has told me three things. One, there is an abscess at the end of the root. Two, my tooth is non-vital. Three, if the abscess doesn't go away the tooth should be pulled.

I have known for a while I would need a root canal or cap on my tooth because I could feel the size of the cavity with my tongue. However there has been no pain, at all. I can see the abscess on the x-ray so I know it's there. The last part I don't understand though. Why would it need to be extracted? Isn't that kind of tooth a good example of a tooth in need of endodontic treatment?

A root canal is endodontic treatment. Your dentist doesn't sound like he expects it to work and sounds 'pull happy', so it might be best to see an endodontist instead. Do not get it crowned until you are sure it has settled.

Teeth with 'botched quickie attempts' at root canals can rumble on for years and then be re-treated but long-term success is better if it is done properly in the first place.
