How often are you suppose to have the panorama x-ray?

I'm just curious how often is normal to have the panorama x-ray? I had one in 2013... which was I think my 2nd one.. I hadn't had one in many years before that. Then I just had another one today, because they said the regular x-rays wouldn't work well to see my wisdom teeth. Is that normal? I'm very nervous about radiation exposure. Can anyone reassure me? I have had tons of regular bite wings, film and digital over the years.. but I know this one is more. The kind they did was digital.

also is it normal for them to not use a thyroid collar? As I think back, i don't know if they ever have used a thyroid collar on me. They put the lead apron on.. but I don't remember the collar. Also, the lead apron with the pano machine, was shorter than the other. Is that normal?


Sorry for all of my questions.. i'm feeling anxious.

If you wold feel better them using a thyroid collar, you should ask if its possible or if it will help with the type of xray they are doing. Ask them how the Xray machine works. Maybe demystifying the process will make you feel better about it.

If you are concerned about radiation, before your next appointment let the dental assistant know about your concern. They can explain how how much radiation the xray puts out, and how much a human body can take in 1 year. They are trained in this and know how many xrays in one year a person can have.

Also, Since its been since 2013, I think you'll be fine (It's 2016 and its been 3 full years since your last panoramic). Also they do need to take a new xray to see how your teeth are doing anyways. I think I had 2 or 3 panoramic xrays done in the past 1 1/2 years... needed lots of xrays for my implant.

Thanks! That's reassuring when I hear others have had several in a short time. I may have had one two years before the one in 2013. I can't remember 100%.

I did all you suggetsted. The hygienist just told me it's very safe. They don't have the collars. And apparently for the pano the collar gets in the way. I guess I was asking to see if most other dentists don't use the collar? I've been to 3 dentists in my life and they never have.

i really just need some basic reassurance that it's not going to harm me.. After all I've been through medically in the past year has turned me into such a hypochondriac. I never use to think twice!
