From the age of 16 to 2014 i was homeless (Im 29 now) i have recently gotten dental insurance and am looking to go to the dentist. But im afraid because its been a long time and i know i have cavities (i still have all my teeth and they are not rooten yet) as well as my brushing habits are almost nonexistent. Im afraid that they will judge me. Can anyone give me some advice?

A good dentist will not judge you. Their job is to help you, not berate you. Explain your situation, and your fears. It's always best to communicate with the dentist. You can look online for dentists who have good reviews and are known for being understanding and patient. :)

Some people on this forum have voiced your fears. They have not been to the dentist in over a decade and feared the worst. And yet most of them have only had minor issues easily corrected. You are young and I suspect your issues if any will be corrected without much fuss. Do not be ashamed. You are on the right track.

I was also away from the dentist for a long time and only recently started rectifying the situation. In addition to reading posts here, one of the things I found most helpful was reading websites for many local dentists in my area. Reading testimonials/reviews, seeing before and afters, and reading more about people's expertise and training helped me identify the right dentist for me. Many people around here also recommend having a phone call/first visit where you just go over the basic procedure and can ask questions, explain you are phobic before anything has to happen or you even have to get in the dreaded chair. You can do this!

Somebody that just started going after 10years also. Get the work done it gets better trust me. Its better to go then have a major issue done the road. My dentist was very helpful. Also let the dentists know your situation that way they understand you better. I was surprised of how easy it was, I still have to get more work done but the first cleaning you will be sore then it gets better. Most dentist are trained for that person that doesn't come in regular. I wouldn't want to be untrained for somebody like me that walks in the door unsure how to work on somebody. They need to be trained for the worst case situation to handle it and Im sure there is other people that are worst then yours.

If you have any questions feel free to message me

Good luck
