I messed up... I stopped going to the dentist and to be honest im petrified again. I've asked to be referred to the community dentist in which they've refused and I haven't been since, I honestly don't know what to do

I think it's normal for anxiety to build up again after you've stopping going for a while. Can you look for someone who has a special interest in nervous patients?

@Imapparentlyhere Hi, I was in a similar situation. I put off going to the dentist because during COVID lockdown I had to see one in an emergency case and all they could offer to do was take the tooth out.

So I avoided going again for fear of losing more teeth in the same or similar circumstances. Anyways, post COVID when things got back to normal I still didn't go to a dentist because I'd ruined my teeth with whitening product (see my journal for more information)

Anxiety builds up and it starts to control your behaviour. It has you avoiding the dentist through fear or embarrassment. Which only makes the anxiety of eventually going to see a dentist, even worse than ever before.

Can you be more specific about your circumstances? It would be much easier to provide well suited advice.

Hi, can you tell us who refused to refer you to the community dental service? I'm asking because if a dentist refused to refer you, in most areas you can get another health professional such as your GP to refer you (and vice versa).

If you're unhappy about the way you've been treated (being refused a referral), you can make a complaint and hopefully they'll be more obliging then:

feel you. after years of neglect I'm working on getting things fixed..

got to where I always hurt a little. but when i go to dentist it's always either an extraction or a cap and eventual root canal.

I'm just getting started getting restored. and generally always in pain. Just keep telling myself this is the cost of neglecting it. I put it all off too long and the "bill" is a lot of pain.

a couple friends are all through it. so there's light at the end of the tunnel... I think... just keep getting care. it will get better.
