Well, 2nd attempt to go to dentist went really bad again! I am trying to get a chrome partial denture sorted for the missing teeth after a terrible year with incompetant detist etc.

My new dentist who is lovelly wanted to prep a tooth for crown today so i can go ahead with this partial denture. I have eaten only mushy foods for a year, lost 2 and half stone in weight and i really want to get the ball rolling with denture to enable me to be normal again.

I completly panicked, was white as ghost, shaking like a leaf, felt sick and he said he didnt really want to do anything with me in this state.

I know if i want this denture i have to have this done but im so scared that something will go wrong again afterwards and i just want to be normal.

what are the chances this crown will upset everything again it is on a 15 yr old root canal. im scared of bite issues that may occur etc

how can i get over this massive fear???

Hiya,
Over in the UK, I told my dentist I was really scared and he prescribed 10mg diazepam (valium) one to take the night before my app, and one to take 2 hours before app. It makes you really drowsy but really relaxed. Ask your dentist if he can prescribe for you so you can cope with the app. Good luck!

Hi Wozzle,
Hats off to you for trying. It must have been incredibly hard just to walk into the treatment room and sit in the chair.
Maybe you were trying to do too much too soon? Sometimes it is better to build up in small steps. For example you might manage to have a small filling done. The dentist can then tell you how the next procedure will compare with the one you have experienced. For example, he might say “if you like we could do two fillings next time. It will take about 10 minutes longer that the one you had done last time”. You will then be able to say to him either “ go for it … it was alright last time and I think I can handle another 10 minutes” or “ I’m not sure if I’m ready for the extra 10 minutes perhaps we could do just the one filling next time”.
As long as your dentist is accurate and honest in his description of the how future treatment will compare to past treatment you should be able to gradually build up to something like a crown prep.
Reading your post I really do agree with midjet666. A little sedation, either oral or iv would make all the difference. Oral sedation would help if you want to build up to gradually and iv if you just need to get the job done quickly.
Don’t give up. You are clearly a very determined person If you combine this strength combined with a dentist who understands apprehensive patients, you will eventually get to where you want to be.
Good luck
Lincoln

Hi wozzle, maybe you could have another chat with your dentist about why exactly the tooth should be crowned and how he's going to make sure that it won't alter your bite :).
