Hi all, wonderful forum. I recently had a tooth extracted as an an emergency appt. Had it been something that was planned I would have looked at bone grafting/immediate implantation but due to circumstances that wasn’t an option.

I can just about afford an implant, and hopefully may be be able to get some payment plan.

I don’t yet know whether I will be a candidate. I’m still healing from extraction, 12 days in and still good size hole there but it was a large tooth and it put up one hell of a fight!

Obviously I haven’t been assessed for implant yet and have no idea what my bone situation is like. There was a little gum recession around the tooth that was removed so I expect there will have been some bone loss.

Can bone grafts be done at a later stage if necessary? Anyone had their implants done later and been successful? I understand I would need to wait at least 3 months for healing to take place anyway.

I’ve never felt this level of anxiety about the future, I think I will need other work doing on other teeth and I have no idea where it’s all gonna end, I cannot afford a full mouth of implants. I am focusing on every sensation/feeling in my gums and teeth and everything feels ‘heightened’

Night time is the worst, I seem to focus on it even more then.

I keep it to myself for the most part as I’m sure I sound crazy and I already get eyerolls when I mention my teeth.

Feel very vulnerable and scared what the future holds, no matter how many times I tell myself to get a grip! It’s a lonely place to be……

@Niki87 Hi. I have never had implants before but I just wanted to let you know that I was told recently at a dentists appointment that I have an infection in my gum and the tooth next to that gum is a bit loose and the dentist said that I either need to have a root canal or have the tooth taken out by a specialist in a hospital and that I can be sedated when it's being taken out. I think I am going to have the tooth taken out and I am very anxious about having it taken out and anxious because I'm not sure if I will be able to have an implant put in so I understand what you are going through. I am anxious that there might be problems when I am recovering too. I have never had a root canal done before but I have heard that it can fail and then I would need to have the tooth taken out anyway. I also havent had any extractions or fillings done since I was in my 20's and I am 41 years old now. I only had 3 teeth taken out when I was in my 20's. I need to have a filling done soon on another tooth and I have has some bone loss on two other teeth that has been there at least since 2019 which is when a dentist first said that I have it. I'm anxious about my next routine check up in 3 weeks time because I dont want the dentist to find something else wrong in my mouth. Anxiety is awful isn't it?. I havent had any pain from the gum next to my loose tooth since I finished the course of antibiotics that the dentist prescribed to me and I gavent needed to take any more pain medication since then but I have heard that the infection could come back . Hopefully I will have had my tooth taken out before the infection comes back and the infection goes away completely after having a root canal and having the tooth taken out anyway.

Hi, thanks for reply, yes it is awful having anxiety, especially around this sort of thing. I do worry when I get any health issues, guess it normal to some degree but with dental issues it’s off the charts. I did have mine extracted as they weren’t confident root canal would work and I wanted to be out of pain as was getting referred pain aswell. Plus root canal is expensive and for me if they didn’t think it had a good chance of working, it’s wasted and still have to then pay for extraction.

Which tooth is it for you? Mine was a lower molar, it was extracted two weeks ago and it took some getting out, healing is happening but slowly for me, which further adds to the anxiety. I’m honestly so fed up thinking and worrying about my teeth. I had upper extractions that came out really easily, like wisdom teeth, but I believe gravity aids the upper ones a bit!
It’s so hard knowing what to do for the best. I also need a couple more fillings. Let me know how you get on.

Ps, regarding implants, I have been told will have to wait at least 3 months, It would prob have been better to have a bone graft at the time but I understand you can have them later if needed. I also have some bone loss so time will tell. The whole process scares me to be honest but I’m not there yet and trying to just take one day at a time, otherwise it gets too overwhelming. It’s easier said than done when you’re a worrier.

@Niki87 I had another emergency appointment at the dental surgery that I usually go to yesterday. The dentist said that I have an infection and abscess and that I have some bone loss near the first tooth that got infected and that the infection and abscess has spread to the tooth next to it and it has broken off the side part of my tooth and the dentist removed the broken part yesterday. It was awful because she just got the pliers and removed the broken part without telling me what she was going to do and just mentioned the bone loss without explaining how I had got the bone loss. So now I have to have two teeth extracted at the hospital instead of one tooth. They are both lower back molars. Also the temporary filling that the dentist put in yesterday has just fallen out so now there is a huge gap in my tooth. I havent been able to eat for days and I have just had meal replacement drinks and other drinks. I hope there is someone that I can complain to about how I have been treated at the dental surgery that I go to . They dont talk to me in a nice way or explain more about the issues in my mouth and why couldnt the dentist or the specialist have prevented the infection and abscess from spreading sooner by taking my tooth out sooner?. I am so fed up of all of the anxiety and how this is all affecting my mental health. The people on this forum are more helpful and supportive than my dentist and the specialists at the hospital are.

Please let me know how you get on when you have your fillings done. I'm sorry to hear that it was difficult to get your lower molar out and that the healing is only happening slowly. I'm glad that your upper extractions happened easily. I'm not sure if I can still have a root canal on the first tooth that got infected because there is bone loss there.

I hope I can have a bone graph too. I'm not sure if anywhere does that where I live. I live in the North West area of England. The whole process scares me too. I keep blaming myself for the dental issues I am having too. I'm sorry to hear that you also have bone loss. It's overwhelming for me too. Before this year, I hadn't needed any extractions or fillings since I was in my 20's. I am 41 years old now so I went for a lot of years with not having any dental issues except some bone loss in two of my upper teeth that I have had deep cleanings for the last six years when I was first diagnosed with the bone loss in those teeth but there were no other issues.
