Injections don't numb the pain

Okay so I've finally accepted that I need an old filling replacing and fill have to book a trip to the dreaded dentist. There's a new surgery near me that's opened that i think I'm going to try The problem I have always had is no matter how many injections I have when the drill it's that nerve.OOWWWWWW!!!!!!
Is there anything I can do or ask for to stop this happening? I worry that dentists don't really seem to take the time to listen to the patient...or does that just happen to me?!
Also I'm wondering if I take some valium before I go to the appointment will that take the edge off the pain as I should feel slightly out of it?

it sounds like you're having a really rough time with getting numb. There are various reasons why the numbing might not work for you. I don't know if you're seen this page yet which explains the most common reasons:

Why not call the new surgery and ask to speak to a dentist there, and ask him what they might be able to do about it? Their answers might tell you how likely it is that they can get you numb. For example, do they suggest trying different anaesthetics, or using different injection techniques (e.g. Gow-Gates block - that's if you have trouble with only bottom teeth not getting numb), or using nitrous oxide or IV sedation etc.? If they won't listen, there would be no point in "trying" them just for the sake of it. Unless there are very few dentists in your area and you've tried them all, there is bound to be someone who can help.

You could check which dentists in your area offer sedation (nitrous oxide and/or IV sedation). There are lots of tips here which might help with the search: https://www.dentalfearcentral.org/help/find-a-dentist/ . Sedation can help with achieving profound numbness.

As your first appointment will usually be for a check-up only, you should discuss the problem then and see if you feel confident in the dentist's ability to make things comfortable for you .

hi there,
when I had my root canal done I was given an ativan tablet beforehand.unfortunately it wasn't very strong so it didn't do much.I was a bit anxious to say the least!During the proceedure i started to feel discomfort.My dentist at that time explained that my anxiety was couneracting the numbing agent.Now my new dentist uses nitrous and injects the numbing agent slowly and I've had no problem.GOOD LUCK and don't give up there's a solution to your problem somewhere!
