So, I have an impacted wisdom tooth that flares up every other year or so. This time the culprit was some trapped food in the area , which led to causing an infection ( no fever or bad swelling- but the gum around it red and inflamed, and the taste coming from the area was as if something had died in there...hope no one who's just eaten reads this comment!)
The day before my dentist appointment I went for a hygienist appointment, and the pain when she cleaned the area was so bad!
Anyway, the following day the dentist took an X-ray- no cavity in the tooth, but an infection and cut in the gum (not sure if the clean the previous day caused this, or if it was already there). She prescribed Metronidazole (am allergic to amoxicillin)

Am this morning on my 4th day of antibiotics, but can still feel discomfort and am not sure the taste in my mouth is caused by the infection or the antibiotics (!). The pain itself is reduced, but it still doesn't feel right. How long can I expect it to take for this infection to clear up?
Am anxious as I am going away next week, and hope I don't need to see the dentist before I leave for venue more antibiotics!

So, what are your experiences? How long did it take for your infection to clear?
Along with the antibiotics- did you do anything else to speed it up? (salt rinses etc)

- I was advised against removing the tooth by a specialist at St Guy's Hospital in London, as the root is embedded around a nerve, and the risk of facial paralysis on that side of my face is a very real one

Washing it out with salt water is a good idea, especially if you can get hold of a syringe and squirt some of the solution under the flap of gum.
It should continue to improve as the antibiotics do their thing.

Thank you so much Gordon !:). I really appreciate you getting back to me.

Is it still normal for it to be tender and a bit achey at this stage ? Am finishing the course of antibiotics this Saturday.
