Is there a filling material that would not show on an xray ???

Hi all, I have not been on for a while, Once I finished at the dentist who was doing my bridge work I kinda had enough of teeth for a while and all I had been through.

I recently finally had a check up with my usual dentist and she did an Xray.. it showed the a lower tooth that had been root canalled and crowned after an infection in a canal that had been that had been missed a number of years ago as looking like it had not been filled.

The dentist looked at the Xrays from about 3 years ago and present day and asked what had happened.. I sort of mumbled everything that had gone on and said, that I had been referred by the PCT to dentist who could fix my problems with the bridge during that time I had developed an infection in another lower crown and although not a specialist agreed to locate the missing root and crown it for me as a favour to me.

(After the tooth had been done, I did voice some concerns on here, that the tooth had been done very quickly.)

The dentist tapped the tooth and asked if I had any pain, which was no and said, not to worry and to leave it now for another 6 months and see how it goes. She also said, " that it might have been filled with something that does not show on the Xray...I can't find any such filling material on the internet..


But now I have really started to worry... DO I have anything to worry about Please

Bump.... please can a dentist help answer my question I am really worried about this tooth, but at the same time It's not a tooth I want to lose Do you think this tooth may have been left unfilled

there are plenty of filling materials that dont show up very well on radiographs. In general we try and avoid them for exactly the reasons youre describing.
I'm not quite sure if you're asking about root filling materials that dont show up? again, there are some but there use isn't recommended.
sounds like your dentist has gotit in hand though. why not drop her a brief letter or arrange a quick chat for clarification

Thanks Rob, I might do that but you have put my mind at rest...

I have heard of some materials that are not recommended. I guess when he had done it I thought he had used one of those materials and did mention it on here. Yes it was a Root Canal, well in fact it was a re root canal. It was not a full re-root, he just located the missing canal and filled the tooth again.

I think he just wanted to do it on the cheap after being asked by the PCT to do the right upper bridge work and another lower crown that was showing a little decay. They also wanted to him to do my other other bridge too after my whole teeth had been lowered but it's a long story and I won't bore you with it. I don't think he was really that happy that I had been sent to him really but I may be wrong. He was not my normal dentist.

The tooth I am speaking of decided to really flare up during the above treatment and he agreed to do the tooth for me as a special favour on the NHS because I could not afford to go private elsewhere, but it was done so quickly and I knew that Gutta percha had not been used so guessed all along it had been done on the cheap.

It was several months ago now, and My check up with my own normal dentist has only just been due so knew nothing of all this for certain until the other day. I was worried that it had not been filled at all when I saw the X-Ray but did not want to have it removed if it was ok.. So I came on here for advice.

Sorry to waffle on but but after three years of dental hell and now this I think my phobia for dentists is here to stay. I used to be fine and confident till this. I thought that all my dental problems were finally over. Three years of hell all because I lost one tooth and as it turned out one missing Root on a Root canal.
