I will try and keep this as short as I can (honest!)
I have had pain since last October when a filling broke in an upper left tooth and my dentist literally popped another one in. The pain got worse and after numerous visits to 2 dentists, a doctor and umpteen x rays- all denied anything was wrong! I finally snapped in February and the dentist agreed to redo the filling which exposed a huge black hole underneath which needed a root canal and a temporary filling.
The pain continued (and to the bank account!)with the dentist saying the root canal was fine and that I had TMJ.Physio sessions followed.
Last month I saw the local hospital consultant dentist who ordered more x rays and found a hole in the root canalled tooth .I now have a beautiful new temporary crown which although twinging is bearable.
However ,now my back RIGHT hand teeth up and down seem to be aching like mad. They are heavily filled after some bad dentistry done (I could write a book!) and, (poor things) have had to put up with all the chewing of food while the root canal was being protected .
My major problem is that I am due on a family holiday in 12 days and I am so worried that i am going to spoil it for my long suffering family.
I have paid 3 visits to my new dentist about this (including today) but he says nothing is showing on the new (yes more!) bite x rays and he tapped them without pain.I asked about painkillers but he said just buy Anadin or similar.I feel like a neurotic nuisance to him but I feel that the pain in the teeth is not stress related as he seems to think but something more serious.
I guess my faith in dentists is seriously dented -is there anything else i can do or take to stop my teeth from erupting further especially while on holiday? So sorry for the long winded question but any advice would be HUGELY appreciated.

Hi I dont have any answers im afraid but am going through a similar problem after 2 root canals.

I atually postponed my holiday for fear of going away with toothache and putting my family through it but in the end i went and yes had toothache all week but just kept up with nurofen every 4 hours and managed to buy an anasthetic spray from pharmacy while i was away, it was hard work but kinda coped and enjoyed the holiday...

feel for you and hope it all get sorted before you go

Sarah

Hi Sarah -Thank you so much for replying -that was really kind of you.So sorry to hear you are having troubles too but good to hear you got through the holiday o.k and even managed to enjoy it!
I don,t know if this is any help to you but I managed to see an endodontist (a root canal specialist -lovely man) on Wednesday who says the root canal was done incorrectly.Apparently if not done in a certain way problems can occur (did a dentist or specialist do yours?) He suggests I go back to my dentist and get a plastic temporary crown put on which would enable me to eat again on that side and therefore giving the right side a well deserved break as they are so achey. (poor things are so heavily filled!!!) He also suggested finding a dentist who wants to treat the right side problem rather than avoid it -a lot of dentists seem more interested in cosmetic stuff rather than pains like me!
He also gave me some antibiotics to take on holiday if I needed them.
The trouble is they are aching so bad I am tempted to take them now but am worried about playing my trump card too soon!!(holiday is a week away)
The good news is that I am apparently doing fine with brushing ,flossing etc so it is frustrating to know what is causing it .The stupid thing about it is that eating is not a problem nor is hot or cold foods or drinks and when he tapped the teeth they didn't hurt !! I feel so silly and don't know whether its because they are inflamed,TMJ or whether I am grinding(all have been suggested to me!!)Even the front of my face now feel pressured!!
Sorry for droning on but it is good to talk.
I so hope that you feel better soon [smiley=hug.gif]
Thanks again

omg all your symptoms sound so similar to mine, I also have been told i have TMJ and they have given me a mouthguard but i cant see that this is whats hurting the root canallled teeth now as ive been so vigilant in wearing it and am purposefully not eating on that side.

like you say i think its an error with the root canal, she said she only found 2 canals in the tooth but its a back wisdom one and parently they have more??!!

im going to get a second opinion a week on monday who does 3d xrays so hope he comes up with an answer, wouldnt mind but ive spent £1100 so far for the privelidge of having 4 months pain.

Maybe take the antibiotcs before you go, cant hurt. I did that and when they ran out i went to doc and got some more at a cost of £100...nice!!

Hope our mouths improve soon, its miserable eh?

Thanks for reply again-yes this is certainly hurtung the bank balance as much as the teeth!
Just a thought-when I saw this specialist this week, he said that root canals should be done through a cloth which is put over your face and which has a small hole in it through which the treatment to be done. This apparently is very important in order to protect things (mine wasn't done this way!!!)

Also my root canal was topped with a temporary white crown originally which although looked prettier is more fragile than the darker ones, and might have been the cause of the small hole that the second dentist found in the top of the tooth and had to be treated .
Only ideas-I hope that the above is correct info-any dentist reading it correct me if you like.
I hope all goes well with the appointment and that you get a sympathetic hearing and result that you want!
P.S did the anaesetic spray work and if so what was it called?
All the best

Hi Sarah
How did things go today-did you managed to save your tooth?

Went back to my original dentist yesterday who put a plastic temporary crown on the root canal as requested but still seems to think I have TMJ and need major physio and exercises. Hmm we shall see!!! its achey as we speak!!!

Thanks for the oagel advice -I am packing every painkilller I can get my hands on-I go this weekend so its too late now for any more treatment!!!

Would love to hear how you got on and that you are all o.k.

If anyone else is reading this and has advice then please let us know?!!!

hiya Calp,

thank you for your concern...

well went in my dentist today, was in and out in 10 mins, she suspects some root left in there and has referred me to a specialist, i asked about the cost and she said she would speak to the boss and see if they can accomodate it! i told her the money pot had run dry and i had no where ese to turn so waiting for phone call from specialist!
Can you beleive she never even did an xray? shocking!
She has forwarded the email she sent to speciaist with attatchments of xrays which wre taken at the tme of rootcanal supposidly being finished so am gona try and download on here to see what the dentists think.
Where are you going on hols? i REALLY hope its pain free and you have a wonderfull time

Im so fed up and cant eat now! living on soup and nurofen!! Kids of school and running rings round me, i just want to be left alone!!

Hope your teeth are improving
