New here! Panicing!!!

Hi everyone!

I'm new here and I've recently started to face my fear of dentistry...to the point that I've gotten all of my upper teeth that needed work done. However, tomorrow I am scheduled to have my lower teeth worked on and I am PETRIFIED. The dentist (who has always made it a point to be honest with me--so I trust him) said that the nerve block will probably hurt about 75% more than the upper injections. What has been everyone's experience with this? I'm so scared of needles and injections!

I have had a nerve block and felt next to nothing, ask the dentist to rub a bit of topical gel on your gum before injecting then if he injects your gum really slowly you won't feel anything. Or at the very least only a slight sting for a couple of seconds.

I have not noticed a difference between upper and lower injections. My dentist puts numbing medicine on my gums.

I too have not noticed any difference between the lower and upper numbing injections. In fact, I think I have only experienced pain with the upper injections to my memory. With good technique, all injections should be painless so I hope that what the dentist has predicted is not the case for you. Maybe he is just giving you worst case scenario? I don't really know why one area would hurt more than another ....my dentist said that depending on whether or not there is a lot of tissue at the injection site will make an injection more or less comfortable because it's the tissue trauma from the medication being injected that is actually painful but it's possible to work around that issue with topical numbing solutions, injecting slowly, and injecting in several increments.

Thank you for the reassuring words guys! I don't know why he said that. Im a bit on the smaller side (i.e. I have to wear the child sized nitrous mask) so maybe that's what he was referring to?? I'm so nervous I'm trying not to think about it! I have also heard horror stories about people getting electric shocks from the injection and not recovering from the numbness so it's all making my head spin. Also, when I was little, I had a traumatic experience with a doctor on my lower teeth so I'm concerned I may not numb as well down there

The electric shock you are on about is not an electric shock, it is when sometimes they catch the nerve itself, if this happens it lasts for a second and you are well numb after it. So if this did happen it isn't a bad thing it just makes you jump. I had it once and didn't know what it was, it does help when you know, if it did happen to me again I wouldn't be worried, it does feel like an elec shock but is really over in a second as I said.

You won't stay numb, it will wear off. Don't worry it is no worse than having injections in the top of your mouth.

I just left my appointment and everything went great!! I've almost fully regained all my feeling and the pain from the shot didn't hurt that much at all (It hurts more now that it's over haha but only when I open my mouth too wide). What a relief!! Thank you all for your support!
