Hello all. I'm new on here hope this is where I post. I have just register with a dentist and seeing one in January if I manage to leave my house. Bit of background I have not seen a dentist for 15 years it's awful o known I am 27 and my parents didn't ever take me as my mother has a extreme phobia I only saw the school dentist then at age 11/12 had a tooth removed it bloody hurt as they only numbed the area but I stil felt it After this I never returned, my teeth are severely messed up and I've only booked this January appointment due to my top back wisdom has been black for a few months I think it means it rotted and my breath smells :( I am so scared what will happen as my front teeth also have black lines on which are getting noticeable and the bigger problem is my teeth are not straight at all I was a thumb sucker as a child so my jaw and teeth are not in the right position and are higher. I'm so scared please help me

Hey over there!

I hope you did not make an appointment with a random doctor, who is great according to your non-phobic friends?

Research. An IV sedation at the practice is a must. If he/she does not have it, the doctor will just assure you that you'll be "just fine if you relax", and then just proceed as usual, which in your case would most probably lead to even worse psychological trauma.

I just want to add a different perspective. Everyone is different. Different dentists do better with anxious/phobic patients than others. Some phobic patients find IV sedation helpful and/or necessary, and some don't. Often getting through the first appointment is the most difficult part. Can you say what you're most anxious about?

I'm so sorry. Fortunately you are young and will heal quickly. You might try just going and seeing how you do. You could take a benadryl to make you a bit sleepy, or even ask your doctor if there is something they can give you. I had to do that. The script, without insurance was less than one dollar.

I think the first appointment will be the toughest, but you will get through it I promise.
