Hello guys! This is my first post ever as i am totally new to this site, I am only 20 years old but have managed to have a lot of unwanted experience in the dental department.:( My question is that i have a root canal on upper tooth #13. It has been root canaled since 2013. i did not have any money for a crown at the time and i also do not have dental insurance! fast forward 2015 and the tooth is not hurting but there is pressure. Pressure to the point that i cant lay down on my left cheek. i can chew but my gums around it ache as well. if i put my tongue over it the tooth aches. The dentist wants to do a crown and then go from there but without dental insurance i am paying $ 1,576 for a crown! . i am only 20 years old and without a decent j.o.b. My parents are willing to meet me half way but what if the crown does not work? what are my options? i would extract the tooth in a hot minute and not replace it with anything but i keep hearing things about super eruption and shifting that i am not sure what to do. i just wouldn't want to pay all that money and not get relief or the tooth ends up splitting or shattering!

from my own unfortunate experience I have learned that a dentist should never ever place a permanent crown on a tooth that aches or has any pain. if your dentist wants to see if a temp crown would help that is one thing but not paying 1500 for a permanent crown. Since root canaled teeth are brittle and can break easily and since you did not have it crowned at the time the possibility is there that your tooth is broken, and if that break is below the gum line the pain and pressure will not stop with a crown. the pain you describe from not even being able to lay on that side is exactly the pain I had with my root fracture. If you want to crown it only agree to a temp crown. then if the temp crown relives your pain get the permanent.

Also you should see an endodontist before you agree to anything because it is possible for root canaled teeth to need to be retreated. sometimes tiny accessory canals were not properly cleaned and can flare up. you may need your root canal redone.
